The studies of Bradford's Law published in these fifty years are reviewed in this paper, which contains also personality of Bradford, his management of the Library and promotion of UDC. It describes formulations by Brookes and Leimkuhler, Wilkinsons method, droop, practical data, stochastic approach and relations with Zipf's Law and information theory. The progress of the studies in a half century has been characterised by mathematical analysis, which expresses regularity of the Law. The paper introduces that irregularity is very important to understand behavior of information based on empirical analysis on droop. The author expects further studies both theoretical and empirical should be developed to establish fundamental aspects of information science.

情報の挙動を計量化し,数学的に取扱うことによって,その現象や特性を記述しようとする計量情報学の理論と実際の両面にわたる活動を要約して紹介する。60年にわたる歩みを概説した後,測度,諸概念ならびに法則性をのべ,それぞれの内容を明確にした。図書館や情報管理に応用できるばかりでなく、科学や科学者の研究にも適用した例をあげ,批判にも言及した。データベース化と電算機解析が,この分野の発展の重要な手段となり,情報学での重要な領域となることが期待されている。

情報交換システムの副産物として,電子版学術誌が生れた。できてみると,甚だ興味ある経験が得られている。第一,早く掲載されるし,読者の反響が直ちに集められ,他の人の動向もずく削るし,情報も容易に得られる。一種の会議に近いし,査読のあるのやないのや,方法に柔軟性がある。また,ニュースレター誌や質問誌など工夫のあとが窺える。タイトルを廃止したり,電子版にもやはり〆切が必要だったり,コストもそれほど高くないという。電子版雑誌創刊の苦労は印刷誌と同様だったという経験と,逆に,従来の観念に捉われすぎたという反省とが交錯したニュージャージー工科大学の実験を紹介する。
