When a head is equipped with a hanger made of wire sideways, and its temporal region is sandwiched by the hanger, the head rotates unexpectedly. We named the phenomenon "Hanger Reflex", and we have studied this phenomenon to understand its mechanism and to show the possibility of utilizing the phenomenon as a human interface or for rehabilitation. In this paper, we evaluated that the necessary conditions of the Hanger Reflex are compressions to temporofromtal region of the head and its counter position. We also developed an interface that can induce head rotation by Hanger Reflex, without giving pain to the user.

In this paper, we propose a novel virtual reality entertainment system using a car as a motion platform. The motion platform is usually installed in special locations such as theme park since it requires large cost and space. On the contrary, by using a car as a motion platform, it is already prevalent and it can be transported easily. We developed a prototype system based on the small-sized electric vehicle. Experiment with immersive contents showed that all users responded quite positively to the experience played on a small parking area.

The Hanger Reflex is a phenomenon in which the head rotates unintentionally when force is applied via a wire hanger placed on the head. It has been confirmed that this phenomenon is caused by pressure, and the direction of the Hanger Reflex contributes to the direction of skin deformation. In addition to the head, similar phenomena have been found in the wrist, waist, and ankle. Until now, we aimed for walking navigation without interpretation of navigation information using the Hanger Reflex, investigated the influence on the head-type, waist-type, and ankle-type Hanger Reflex on walking, it was confirmed that the waist-type Hanger Reflex most efficiently affects walking. However, assuming a scene to actually use as walking navigation, the current waist-type Hanger Reflex device is difficult to say that it is easy to use because the user oneself needs to shift the device. Moreover, in addition to scenes without interpretation of navigation information, it can be assumed that scenes with interpretation of navigation information, such as "Follow" or "Resist". In this paper, in order to use the waist-type Hanger Reflex for actual walking navigation, developed a controlled device of the waist-type Hanger Reflex using four pneumatic actuators, and investigated the effect of the waist-type Hanger Reflex on walking caused by difference in interpretation of navigation information. As a result, we confirmed that the developed waist-type Hanger Reflex device can control the walking path and body direction, depend on user's interpretation difference.

Studies about electrical current passing through the body such as bioelectricity measurement, electrical excitation, and electrical stimulus have contributed to the field of medical and biological engineering. To evaluate the applicability of the Clinical Trials Act, stimulus conditions are needed to be designed based on the understanding of safety criteria provided by various organizations, as well as the effects of the electricity applied to the human body. Because electrical current causes various effects such as perception, pain, injury, and fibrillation, safety design is essential. This paper summarizes the effects and safety criteria of the electricity applied to the human body based on the available guidelines. Furthermore, effects and criteria of the electricity applied to the head are discussed. Finally, we present an example of the stimulus evaluation to confirm the applicability of the Clinical Trials Act.

The Hanger Reflex is a phenomenon that a head rotates involuntarily when the head is fastened with a wire hanger. This phenomenon is also observed on the wrist, and is expected to apply for small and simple haptic feedback device. However, the poor responsiveness and large actuators are still left as issues. In the meantime, we discovered a phenomenon that the perceptual force from the hanger reflex is enhanced when the vibration is presented to the wrist. If we can control this simple and strong perceptual illusion, we can cope issues still left and realize the small and simple haptic device. Therefore, in order to apply this phenomenon to the haptic device, this paper reports details about this phenomenon and the effect of the frequencies and amplitudes of the vibration. As results of the experiments, we observed that the low frequency (50-100Hz) vibrations efficiently enhanced the perceptual force. Also, we observed that the participants perceived stronger perceptual force if the vibration of a greater amplitude was presented. These results suggest that the enhancement of the perceptual force is controllable and can apply to the haptic device.

Listening music with mobile devices is now a part of our daily life. With the aim of generating vibration-based feedback to enrich musical listening experiences with mobile devices, we have applied a frequency shifting method, which was proposed previously in the literature for mixer manipulation or cross-modal relationship between tactile and auditory stimuli. Experimental results showed that the proposed method significantly increased the listener's evaluation of sound consisting of high-frequency components.

Application of the Hanger Reflex to walking navigation was investigated. The Hanger Reflex is a phenomenon that produces an illusory force and involuntary rotation of the body parts by skin deformation. It was first applied at the head by using a wire hanger, but is now known to work on many body parts such as the waist, wrist, and ankle. In the experiment combining Hanger Reflex devices at the head, waist, and ankle, we confirmed that the waist-type Hanger Reflex is the most effective, and that combined Hanger Reflex imparted limited influence on the results.

我々は皮膚表面に温度変化を提示することで上下方向の移動感や触力覚を生じる錯覚現象を発見し,その性質を研究 してきた.本現象では温度上昇時に上方向の移動感や膨張感を,温度下降時に下方向の移動感や吸引感を生じる.我々 はこの錯覚現象を利用し,直立した人間の左右それぞれの足裏に逆方向の移動感を提示することで段差や地面の傾き を表現できると考えた.本稿では足裏に温度変化を提示する装置を開発し,刺激温度の変化が生起する感覚や姿勢に どのように影響するのか検証した.

近年視聴覚コンテンツの臨場感向上を目的とした全身触覚提示デバイスが数多く提案されている.こうしたデバイ スは共通して体格差による着脱の制限や煩雑さの問題を持つ.そこで本研究は身体に装着する振動子の数を可能な限 り減らし,かつ広範囲に振動を提示するため,ユーザの骨を介して身体広範に振動を提示することを試みる.本稿で は,身体広範囲に振動を伝達可能な骨部位の選定を行い,結果として選定された鎖骨に適した振動提示デバイスを製 作した.

It has been reported that haptic perception ability is diminished by wearing gloves and other clothing. To resolve this problem, we propose a transmission system of haptic information that consists of a haptic sensor on the surface of the clothing and a haptic display between the clothing and the skin. Using this system, haptic information is transmitted as if it penetrated the clothing. We named this concept “Haptic-Through”, and the system having this function “Haptic-Through Systems” collectively. In this paper, as an example of Haptic-Through Systems, we implemented and evaluate a finger-mounted Haptic-Through System.

視聴覚コンテンツの臨場感を高めることを目的として,身体の広範囲へ触力覚を提示する手法は数多く提案されているが,提示領域の狭さ,着脱の手間などの課題がある.我々はこの問題に対して,着用している衣服自体を牽引することにより衣服ずれを生じさせ,広範囲かつ簡易に触力覚を提示可能とする手法を提案する.本報告ではシステム構成および予備的な実験結果について述べる.

This paper reports detection threshold of human hairy skin when a vibration is presented on a skin via the hair human has. This vibration is provided from a tip of an instrument which travels horizontally against the human skin also the tip holds the hair. And the stimulation point is the middle of hair on the back of human finger, then the instrument does not contact with the surface of the skin directly. Presented stimulations have any frequency and amplitude, we measured threshold this vibration is detected. After some tentative experiments with three persons, the detection thresholds of human hairy skin represent a curve similar to the threshold curve of Patinian. This result has a suggestion that the stimulation infects Patinian capsule.

ぬいぐるみに人とのインタラクション機能を付与する従来の提案の多くは,ぬいぐるみに音声や手足および眼球の動き,呼吸や心拍に伴う動き等を付与するものであったが,不完全に実現されたインタラクションはかえってぬいぐるみに対する没入感を損なう危険があった.今回我々はぬいぐるみに生き物感を付与する最小限の構成として,目の表面の涙のゆらぎを表現する手法を提案する.涙のゆらぎは鏡面反射によって拡大して知覚されるため,微小な動きで人に知覚させることが出来,また感情表現を行える可能性がある.今回は水中の気泡と振動子を用いるだけの簡易な手法で目のゆらぎを実装し,その効果を検証した.

Receiving tactile information from a slave-robot is a necessary component of telexistence with haptic display, but there are few tactile sensors that can measure the distribution of three-dimensional force vectors on a surface. For this reason, we developed a sensor that provides three-dimensional force distribution by detecting movement vectors in the transparent elastic body with a video camera. From a result of the experiment, it turned out this approach is effective.

"Laughter is the best medicine" and "The good medicine none superior to laughter", as these proverbs have been existed, it has long been believed that laughter has health-promoting effect. Recently, it is confirmed that laughter has various effects of disease treatment. For example, it normalize NK-cell (natural killer cell) activity, relieve pain of rheumatoid arthritis, inhibit rise in blood sugar level and inhibit allergen reaction. Therefore, laughter is widely demanded from daily situation (cartoon, comedy and TV program) to medical situation of the hospital clown etc. In such background, we want to arbitrarily enhance person's laughter, and convert every situation into laughter. To attain this goal, we assumed that laughter can be enhanced by piling up various laugh induced stimuli (titillation, laughter, cartoon, comedy). Based on this assumption, we proposed noble concept of "Laugh enhancer system". According to this concept, we prototyped a system that produces laugh track (laughter) synchronized with the user's laugh motion. We named the system "Flatters". In this paper, after introducing our system overview, we examined laugh enhancement effect of Flatters.

There are numerous proposals of tactile displays that aim to improve music listening experiences. However, these devices commonly have problems, such as the heavy weight and large size of the device due to numerous actuators, which lead to long setup time and user confinement to the system. To address these issues, we proposed to present vibration via user's collarbone. In this paper, we first investigated whether presenting vibration to the collarbone really contributes vibration transmission to wider areas of a user's body. Then, we performed a psychophysical experiment to evaluate subjective vibration effect with actual music listening experience. Results suggest that presenting vibration through the collarbone induces vibration transmission to wider area, and contributes user's subjective music listening experience.

本研究は情動を引き起こす触覚体験の単位要素の同定および情動を引き起こす触覚体験に必要な触覚ディスプレイの設計論構築を行った.応用事例として,音響スピーカを用いた触覚提示装置,鉛筆削りを模した触覚提示装置,笑い増幅器,音響コンテンツに合わせた耳触覚,歯磨き振動変調による心地よさ増幅,立毛による驚き感覚の増幅,擬似心拍の提示による親近感の増幅を行い,さらに触聴覚間の和音の存在を明らかにした
