I discuss the basic plot of the story by studying the transmission of the sacred sword which Kiyomori was given by the god of Itsukushima and the arms - a suit of armor named Karakawa and a sword named Kogarasu - which were transmitted from one descendant to another in the direct line of the Taira family, in connection with the descriptive parts of the story. The story of the Komatsu family, which becomes apparent in this text, suggests the tranferring the rein of government from the Taira family to Yoritomo and contains the felicita- tion to the new generation represented by Yoritomo, in which I think lies the essence of this story.

「平家物語」の叙述構造は、可視的世界(顕界)と不可視的世界(冥界)との両者に光をあててこそ、その姿を正しくとらえることが出来る。その観点から物語を分析すると、「平家物語」には、清盛→重盛→頼朝という「日本国の大将軍」の移行という構想がうかがえ、それは、生命力の衰弱したこの世界(末法世界)を、冥界からアラブル神の龍神が侵犯し、再生させる過程として顕界に表現される。その構造を明らかにすることは、またこの物語のモノガタリたる性質を、作品論として解明する手がかりとなるであろうと思われる。
