We report the presence of the coral-killing sponge species Chalinula nematifera (de Laubenfels, 1954) in southern Japan via photographic records and specimens. The species appears to be a substrate generalist on scleractinians and occasionally octocorals, and is found across a wide variety of depths (0 to 24 m), as has been recently reported for this species from Indonesia. From our information, the species is found in southern Japan across the southern and central Ryukyu Islands, with a northern limit of Amami-Oshima Island, although future work will likely expand the range. As our records stretch back more than 20 years, we do not believe Chalinula nematifera is a recent arrival to the region. Due to the potential for this species to harm coral reefs, we suggest field surveys are needed to establish a baseline distribution and abundance database to aid in future monitoring.

Two specimens of Ophiopsila cf. polyacantha H. L. Clark, 1915 are described from approximately 15 m water depth at Kakeromajima island, Amami Islands in southwestern Japan. The species occurs on sandy bottoms with the disc buried and the arms extended above the substratum. Bioluminescence and burrowing behavior are described. The specimens are clearly morphologically different from the two species of Ophiopsila Forbes, 1843 previously recorded from Japan. The new Japanese name “Kin-habu-toranoo-kumohitode” is proposed.

With a focus on building an inventory of subtropical species of epifaunal holothurians and completing an environmental assessment, SCUBA surveys were carried out in the Amami Islands of Kagoshima Prefecture in southern Japan. The following 12 nominal species belonging to seven genera (subgenera), as well as two as yet undescribed species belonging to two genera, were observed: Bohadschia argus Jäger, 1833; B. bivittata Mitsukuri, 1912; B. vitiensis (Semper, 1867); Holothuria (Halodeima) atra Jäger, 1833; H.(H.) edulis Lesson, 1830; Holothuria (Microthele) nobilis (Selenka, 1867); Personothuria graeffei (Semper, 1867); Stichopus chloronotus Brandt, 1835; S. hermanni Semper, 1867; S. naso Semper, 1867; Thelenota anax H.L. Clark, 1921; Euapta sp.; Synapta maculata (Chamisso et Eysenhardt, 1821); and Opheodesoma sp. In the semi-closed waters around the Amami Islands, epifaunal holothurians showed what seemed to be species-specific distribution patterns related to topographical features. Furthermore, ignition loss values of feces and sediments suggested that selective deposit feeding may be predominant in at least several of the species sampled.

The zooxanthellate scleractinian species Goniopora stokesi is widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific Ocean, and in Japan the northernmost records of this species are from Tatsukushi, Kochi on Shikoku, although these records are not associated with specimens deposited in museums. The species is unique among Goniopora in that it lives on soft bottom sediment, forming free-living colonies, and produces asexual daughter colonies, or ‘polyp balls,’ via budding from parent colonies. Here we report on a large G. stokesi community from Otsuki, Kochi, Japan, representing the northernmost specimen-based record of the species. Specimen-based records are important as verifiable baseline data in light of global warming and climate change, which is expected to drastically effect the marine flora and fauna of Kochi and surrounding areas.

Three species of the family Euphylliidae (Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Hexacorallia, Scleractinia) have been formally recorded for the first time from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, based on specimens. Their unique polyp morphology, such as the combination of extended tentacle, are considered to be useful for taxonomy at the species level in genus Fimbriaphyllia Veron and Pichon, 1980 and Euphyllia Dana, 1846. One reason that their distribution might have been overlooked is the insufficiency of environmental surveys, including turbid, sheltered, and upper mesophotic environments.

Objectives: Fetal human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection might be involved in fetal growth restriction (FGR). Maternal serostatus and the prevalence of congenital HCMV infection are affected by various factors, such as socioeconomic status and ethnicity. Therefore, the prevalence of congenital HCMV-related FGR should be examined in each region. Methods: Seventy-eight cases of FGR with delivery between January 2012 and January 2017 at Fujita Health University Hospital were studied. Twenty-one non-FGR cases were also included as a control group. Placental sections obtained from the FGR and control cases were immunostained with two primary antibodies for detecting immediate early antigens. Results: Nineteen placental samples from FGR cases with another etiology were excluded. Finally, 59 placental samples from FGR cases of unknown etiology were included in the pathological analysis. Four of 59 (6.8%) placental samples were positive for HCMV antigen. All four positive cases were stained with the M0854 antibody, and cases showed positivity for the MAB 810R antibody. Neither maternal nor infantile clinical features were different between the HCMV-positive and -negative FGR cases. A pathological examination showed a hematoma in three of four cases and infarction in two of four cases. Conclusions: HCMV antigen was detected in 6.8% of placental samples obtained from FGR cases without an obvious etiology. No remarkable maternal or neonatal clinical features discriminated HCMV-related FGR from FGR due to other causes. Vasculitis and inflammation might play important roles in the pathogenesis of HCMV-related FGR.
