Ostorhinchus fleurieu Lacepede, 1802 is recorded from Japan for the first time on the basis of 21 specimens (37.6-106.8mm standard length) collected from Kagoshima Prefecture, southern Japan. On the basis of underwater photographs, Osezaki, Izu Peninsula, is regarded as the northernmost record of the species. The new Japanese name "Kongo-tenjikudai" is proposed for the species. Comparisons of Ostorhinchus fleurieu with closely related species, O. aureus, based on 21 and 12 specimens, respectively, from Japan showed that O. fleurieu differed from O. aureus in having fewer total gill rakers (19-21, mode 21 vs. 23-24, 24 in the latter) and developed gill rakers (16-18, 18 vs. 18-21, 20), the pelvic-fin base located below the first lateral-line scale (vs. second scale), and a poorly defined, barrel-shaped black band on the caudal peduncle (vs. well-defined, sandglass-shaped band).

ZooBank is intended as the offcial registry of Zoological Nomenclature, according to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature. Since its launch in 2005, more than 73,000 records of Nomenclatural Acts, >29,000 Publications, and >11,000 Authors have been deposited in ZooBank as of this writing. An explanatory introduction for ZooBank and proposed three scenarios for mandatory registration of names governed by the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature is given in the Japanese language to popularize relevant issues in domestic taxonomic researchers

Reproductive isolation and evolution of copulatory organ in eleven interstitial species of the genus Parapolycope (Ostracoda, Myodocopida) were discussed. The shapes of male ejaculatory duct are divided into the three types i.e., a helical tube type (Type H), a curved short tube type (Type S), and tapering long tube type (Type L). And the correlation between the shapes of copulatory organs in both sexes is recognized as, what we call, the "lock and key". After copulation, the female genital openings of Parapolycope sp. 2 are often blocked by a rod-shape structure. The rod-shaped structure is thought as a part of the male copulatory duct. The phylogenetic relationships of several Parapolycope species were estimated by the mitochondrial COT gene sequences. According to this, the extremely long type of copulatory duct must have evolved gradually from the short curved tube type. As a hypothesis to explain the development of the extremely long type of ejaculatory duct, the concept of an "evolutionary arms race" would be applicable.

Personal computers (PCs) are now indispensable to any field of study, and it is important to master efficient ways to compose documents, analyze data, and manage literature. This is especially true of illustrations, which take much time and repeated editing prior to use in publications, posters, presentations, and so on. Although some reports exist on techniques for making digital illustrations there has been rapid progress in the development of new PC hardware and software, so that some types of previously intractable digital graphical processing methods are now feasible and even routine. In this report, we introduce an easy and efficient way to make digital illustrations based on recent progress in software development. Using as an example small arthropods, our main study subject, we demonstrate a digital illustration method implemented in Adobe^[○!R] Illustrator CS3^[○!R], and describe the use of CombineZ, a focus stacking software.

"Crabs of Japan" from the Expert Center for Taxonomic Identification (ETI), University of Amsterdam is going to be published from ETI. The information of this CD-ROM is based on "Crabs of Japan and the adjacent Sea by Tune Sakai (1976). The section of the true crabs is now extensively revised and extended by the extended carcinologist; Dr. Daniel Guinot, Museum national d' Histoire naturelle, Paris, Dr. Peter Davie, Queensland Museum, Brisbane, and the Dr. Michael Ttirkay, Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg, Frankfurt am Main. Some 1250 species of Brachyuran crabs from Japan and adjacent sea are recognized, and information on genera, families and etc is also provided. Herewith the Japanese common names of crabs are added for the Japanese users (http://www2.shikokuu.ac.jp/people/crabs/).

The Duskytail Grouper, Epinephelus bleekeri (Perciformes: Serranidae), is recorded from Tanega-shima and Amami-oshima islands and the Yaeyama Islands in the Ryukyu Islands, southern Japan on the basis of six specimens (232.6-581.2 mm standard length). In addition, several records of E. bleekeri by photographs and/or observations from Kanagawa, Kochi, Ehime, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima prefectures are confirmed. Because E. bleekeri has previously been recorded from Taiwan and southward, the present specimens represent the first reliable records of the species from Japanese waters on the basis of collected specimens. Distributional implications of E. bleekeri in Japanese waters are discussed.

Dicyemid mesozoans (phylum Dicyemida) are endoparasites that are typically found in the renal sac of benthic cephalopod molluscs. Dicyemid bodies are very simply organized, consisting of only 8 to 40 cells, which is the fewest number of cells in metazoans. The current paper gives an overview of the morphology of dicyemids and reviews current status of the taxonomy of dicyemids. The renal sac of cephalopods is a unique environment providing habitat for a diversity of dicyemids. The current paper also reviews recent advances in several biological aspects, such as prevalence, zoogeography, and host specificity. The degree of host specificity differs among different species of dicyemids, although the recent study reveals narrow host specificity. Most previous descriptions were based on the character of vermiform stages, and several species seem to be incorrectly identified. The current study suggests that the cellular composition and cell types of infusoriform embryos are significant characters used to help identify dicyemids species. In addition, the type host specimen for a new species of parasite is briefly discussed The accurate identification of a host organism is an important component in the taxonomic recognition of a new species of parasite.

In 1997, Masatsugu Takano and the applied population genetics research group at Tohoku University published a ground-breaking paper on biochemical and morphological evidence indicated that there were two sympatric forms, interpreted as sibling species, of the common crab Hemigrapsus penicillatus (De Haan). This species is very common in intertidal rocky shores, pebble beaches and mud flats in Japan, Korea and China, but prior to Takano et al., no one had noticed that the species comprised two different forms. A recent intensive study by Prof. Seiichi Watanabe, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, and his research group revealed further differences between the two forms, including coloration, allometry, egg size and number, and geographical distribution. Watanabe and myself recognized these as two distinct species and described one of them as a new species Hemigrapsus takanoi in 2005.

About 130 years has passed since L. Koch (1878) published the first paper on Japanese spiders. Today there are still many undescribed species in Japan. Based on papers published in the journal of the Arachnological Society of Japan during the last five years, three professional and six amateur researchers are now actively studying the taxonomy of Japanese spiders. Most of their publications are descriptive studies, e.g. description of new species, revision of a genus or a family. Phylogenetic analyses using morphological or molecular data have been published for many countries, but not for Japan. It is becoming increasingly urgent to foster young spider taxonomists. The traditional approach in taxonomy seems to be arbitrary and therefore not attractive for young researchers. Japanese leading taxonomists should adopt modern methods such as phylogenetic analyses in order to attract young successors.

In Japan, 111 species (including 11 unidentified taxa) of epicaridean isopods have so far been recorded. All species are parasites, infesting various crustacean hosts, such as Decapoda, Ostracoda, Cirripedia, Mysidacea, and etc. Their larvae are known from ectoparasites of pelagic copepods. In the present paper, 121 species of crustacean hosts of epicaridean isopods are listed (1 species of Ostracoda, 8 of Copepoda, 1 of Balanomorpha, 1 of Rhizochephala, 2 of Mysidacea, 11 of Penaeidea, 33 of Caridea, 1 of Astacidea, 5 of Thalassinidea, 27 of Anomura, 30 of Brachyura, and 1 of unknown taxa).
