Edmund Burke is generally recognized as the father of modern conservatism. For conservaties, he has been a continuing source of inspiration and a reservoir of ideas to counter the steady growth of radicalism and revolution since his day. As a conservative, what Burke had to conserve before everything else was the British Constitution. It seemed to him the best of constitutions. He did not regard the British Constitution as perfect, but he looked upon it as perfect for Englishmen. The purpose of this study is to clear the conservative political thought of Edmund Burke by considering his "Speech to the Electors of Bristol" and his plan for Economical Reform.

This article is a part of trials of the searching for the philosophical premises of "action" which is generally situated in the starting point of sociology. Recently, there has been a hot contraversy which is concerned in the Nietzsche's will to power, that is, a contraversy between the so called post-structuralism and the hermeneutics. Concretely, this contraversy has been developed by focusing on the Heidegger's interpretation of Nietzsche. On the one hand, by J. Derrida who is the representative of the former, and the other hand, by H.-G. Gadammer who is the same of the latter. In this paper, I'm going to chach the sight of stronger basis of sociological theory through the critical study of this contraversy.

This is a study of the relationship between the status of permanent neutrality and the modern system of collective security. The point in question is whether or not the status of permanent. Neutrality is compatible with the system of collective security which requires its members to participate in coercive measures against a common enemy. Based on a number of scholastic arguments presented in the past this is a comparative study of two different arguments : one by Switzerland which is not a member of the United Nations, and the other by Austria which has been a member of the U. N. since 1955. First, it examines these arguments in order to determine why Switzerland and Austria chose different, courses. Then, actual practices of these states in relation to the U. N. are examined in order to probe the possibility or impossibility of the existence of permanent neutrality in the United Nations. It is, then, concluded that, from a legal point of view, there remain many conditions that must be met before a permanently neutral state can become a member of the U. N. without any anxiety. But Austria became a member for her own politicalreasons, and the stability of her status in the U. N. largely depends on the political atmosphere of the organization. Whether a member of the U. N. or not, a permanently neutral state can contribute a great deal to the world peace in its own way.

1920年代において, アメリカ史学界を蔽いつくした観のあった安全弁説は, 30年代に入って, フロンティア学説批判中の最大の争点として, 俄かに物議をかもしはじめる。この突然とも見える批判の嵐は何故に生じたのであろうか?本稿では, D・A・シャノンの示唆に基づき, 大恐慌とそれに続くニューディール時代の社会不安との関連において, その原因を追求してみる。そのためにこの時期を, 1929年以後のフーヴァー政権時代, NRA体制とその修正時代, 37年以後の再度の景気後退時代-の三つに別けて, 各々の時点での関連を考察する。その上で, 安全弁説への疑惑の発生, その後の批判活動の波動等が, 29年直後のパニックとは結びつかないこと, むしろニューディール政策とその破綻による社会的・経済的不安が, その原因であったことなどを, 明らかにするのが本稿の目的である。

The writer of present paper carried out field work research in what he calls "Kita RyuKyu (North Ryukyu)" islands in 1985 and 1986. He later intended to reconstruct, from the data collected in seven dialects of Amami Oshima islands, a language called "Proto-Amami (PA)." The purpose of reconstructing this proto-language was to find out potential evidence which could shed light on one of the most putative phonological problems of Old Japanese (OJ). The problem is what has been known as the orthographic distinction of "Ko-rui" and "Otsu-rui" syllables present in written records of Old Japanese. The present article discusses first some technical problems found in past approaches to OJ phonology, and then proposes to set up a new syllabary chart of Old Japanese, having pointed out pros and cons of the one traditionally adopted by past Japanese linguists. Finally it will formulate sound carrespondences of OJ and PA. Due to limitation in time and length of the present paper, however, the writer confines his arguments to the matter regarding the "Ko-rui/Otsu-rui" distinction of OJ "O-dan" syllables (the OJ syllbles that may have a vowel /o/.

This article treats of the merits and demerits on Riffaterre's stylistic theory which applies structural linguitics. We base our judgments on an examination of the structural dualities : 'cause' and 'effect', 'encodage' and 'decodage', 'contraste' and 'convergence', 'microcontexte' and 'macrocontexte', etc. It follows then that his ideas of 'contraste' and 'contexte', especially, are still valid.

Edmund Burke had earned some reputation as a man of letters, before committing himself to politics around 1765. This phase of his life has been eclipsed by the brilliance of his career as a politician, but some of that brilliance is consequence of his having practiced literature before his pursuit of politics. In this paper, I proposed to affirm the close relationship between Burke's aesthetics and his political thought through examination of Part V of A Philosophical Inquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful (1757), which is generally regarded as the least political of all his works.

高等学校で現在使用されている教科書「国語I」・「国語II」において,近・現代短歌の教材がどのように扱われているかを,各出版社から発行されているすべての教科書26種類について調査した。すなわち,教材の組み立て方・収録短歌数・誰のどの短歌を載せているか・第2次世界大戦後に作られた短歌を何首掲載しているか・多くの教科書に採用されている短歌は,どの歌人のどの歌か,などについて調査し,10年前に調査したときと比べて,一部の教科書ではあるが,いろいろな新しい試みがなされていることを探り,その可能性と問題点について考察した。

Edmund Burke introduced an Economical Reform Bill into Parliament on 11 February 1780 with one of his finest speeches. It was a refrom bill which would reduce patronage power of the Crown, and thus reduce its power to control the House of Commons. It was not Burke's intention blindly to preserve any institution. He recognized that change was an integral part of the social process. He advocated many reforms, especially economical reform. But reform for him meant the amelioration of the British Constitution, not its replacement by something new. Therefore his conception of reform was intrinsically conservative. In this paper, I clarify the relationship between conservation and reformation in Burke's political thought.

On November 16,1775,Edmund Burke introduced his last plan for conciliation. This plan marked a fundamental change in his thinking, for in it Burke indicated his willingness to repudiate the right of parliament to tax America for revenue. Burke's Bill was negatived by 210 votes to 105,and it was immediately followed by Lord North's American Prohibiting Bill. On May 1777,Burke published A Letter to the Sheriffs of Bristol. With On American Taxation (1774) and On Conciliation with America (1775), A Letter to the Sheriffs of Bristol completes the trilogy of his pronouncements on America. In this Pamphet, Burke expained the reasons for the Rockinghams' secession, then went on to examine the American question again, and finally gave a eloquent, generalized defense of a practical approach to politics. I study the prudential political thought of Burke in his last plan for conciliation and in his A Letter to Sheriffs of Bristol.

Edmund Burke supported the American colonists before the Revolution, notwithstanding the "conservatism" of his beliefs. He served as agent for the New York Assembly from 1770 to 1775 and did every thing in in his power to prevent the outbreak of hostilities, by reconciling British sovereignty and American liberty. On April 19,1774,Burke delivered his Speech on American Taxation, in which he spoke in support of a motion for the repeal of the Tea Duty. Then, Burke gave his Speech on Consiliation with America, on March 22,1775,when political tension was at its highest point, and when alreacy the quarrel between Great Britain and her colonies had drifted to the verge of war. This speech has been studied and admired as a masterpiece of oratory. In this paper, I examine principally the political thought of Burke in the two Speeches on America.

Yuan Ji(阮籍) is known as one of "the seven wise men in the bamoboo thicket" in the Wei Jin(魏晋) Period in China. His main thought and practice throughout his life was originally rooted in those or Lao-tze and Zhuang-tze(老荘思想). These traditional ways of thinking gave him influenced his opinions and writings great deal. Especially his philosophy clearly appears in the usage of the expression of Zi-ran of Nature(自然) in the text of Da-zhuang-lun(達荘論). He emphasised the real meaning of it, but as a basic discipline of manners and behavior to be a man of consummate virtue. At the same time, he was very emphatic about the necessity of becoming an ideal guman being, which would be possible only through approzching more closely to the world of "do-nothinism" as a Taoist.

kabuki, one of the oldest show businesses in Japan, started in 1603 when Izumo-no Okuni (Okuni from Izumo) first performed a Kabuki dance on a stage in Kyoto. It was also the year that Iyeyasu Tokugawa established the Tokugawa Regime in Edo (present Tokyo). Okuni's Kabuki dance reflected the fresh atmodphere of this new era. The audience in Kyoto gave a big applause to Okuni who appeared on the stage dressed in the style of 'Kabuki-mono, ' literally meaning 'slanting person.' 'Kabuki-mono' was the name given to rescals who liked to draw other people's attention by wearing gaude clothes. They were the men who often did violence causing nuisance to townpeople, but at the same time they were the heroes of the time. In fact, they were the successors of 'akuto' (rascals), 'basara' (gilded vulgarians), and 'kyo-warawa' (children of Kyoto) living in and around Kyoto for over three hunder years since the end of Kamakura Period. Performances of Kabuki were not limited only in Kyoto but soon spread over the whole countrym from Edo to Kyushu, and won a big popularity. The Tokugawa government was not happy with the vulgarity and indecency of kabuki and finally in 1629 decided to segregate Kabuki theaters. However, what the government regarded as 'vulgarm indecent, and wicked' was nothing but the charm of kabuki and it was exactly what kabuki-goers loved to see on the stage. The root of kabuki and its char, therefore, should be sought for in the characterictics of 'Kabuki-mono' first turned into a theatrical figure by Okuni. This paper is an attempt to see the true spirit of Kabuki by tracing back the histry of this 'Kabuki-mono, ' the slanting person.

One of the most important ceremonies that the bongthing, a kind of shaman of the Lepchas, performes is that of Mt. Kangchenjunga, an abode of the protector of Sikkim as well as of the Lepchas. On the other side of the Kangchenjunga is the legendary land called Mayel inhabited by the immortals who are patrons of crops and fertility and guarded by three demonic brothers, one a guardian of hunters and the other two guardians of Himalayan animals. Bongthing is mythologically said to be the inhabitant of the Tiamtan, an intermediate place between the deities' Rum land and the earth. In the Sikkimese version, Tiamtan is the site where the King Kesar, a legendary hero of Tibetan origin, resided for a while before his incarnation as a savior on the earth. With the tide of modernization of Sikkim, the legendary hero Kesar has become a war god, while the Kangchenjunga is celebrated with national festivity. These cosmological ideas and their changes are discussed here through the analysis of supplementary data obtained in the field research in Sikkim in 1984 and 1986.

Franklin D. Roosevelt's promise of a "new deal" gave hope to millions of impoverished Americans during the Great Depression, but the intractabilityof the economic situation left much of his pledge unfulfilled. This paper seeks to explain why the American depression of the 1930s lasted so long. I have studied a system, a structure of economic life and how it came to gref in the time between the world wars. The economic collapse of the 1930s, inducing major changes in the role of government in American life, and preceding a war that dramatically altered the nation's role in world affairs, has been examined in a wide variety of ways. A study that explicitly offers an explanation of the depression's length should contribute to the histrians argument that in the thirties exceptional economic conditions transformed the country's political and social framework. Moreoverm it should afford the economist some useful insights regarding business and unemployment.
