The container crane of the harbor received the enormous damage in the Hanshin Awaji great earthquake disaster. After that, the container crane with seismic vibration isolation system has been developed and operated in practical use. We proposed the rocking type of vibration isolation sysem (RVIS) for the container crane instead of the horizontal type of vibration isolation system that is used in bridges and building. It was found that the damping factor of RVIS mechanism has the particular values for the different natural vibration modes. In this paper, we propose the application of a semiactive control system to the RVIS mechanism to improve the isolation performance and operation efficiency. The Kalman filter in used to estimate the system state values. The results of the isolation controlled by the semiactive system are better seismic isolation in performance than the passive RVIS. And we show that the semi-active RVIS can be used in the operation of the container crane.

A basic noise control system applicable to a moving evaluation point was proposed in the previous report, and its effectiveness was examined numerically and experimentally. Although the results showed that the proposed system is effective, it can only handle the case of slow evaluation point velocity. This restriction seemed to be due to the slow convergent speed of the adaptive filter. In this paper the cause of restriction is examined in detail, and an advanced control system is proposed. The features of the proposed system are as follows : 1) Improved feedback controller where main filter is less affected by the movement of the evaluation point. 2) Introduction of IIR filter together with the learning identification method to the error path identifier. The new system is examined both in simulation and experiment and shows great improvement compared with the basic model.

We conducted full scale experiment to study the derailment mechanism of high speed railway vehicle by earthquake ground motion. The experiment was arranged to mimic the vehicle/track conditions of Tokaido Shinkansen by using the bolsterless bogie and the track materials both presently in use for Tokaido Shinkansen. Large excitations enough to derail the test vehicle were given, so that derailment motions were fully captured. Through the tests, (1) Total 34 cases of derailment were observed by the sine wave excitations in the frequency ranges of 1.1Hz to 1.5Hz. The test vehicle was derailed as the result of rocking motion. (2) Wheel lifts of around flange height without derailment were observed by the sine wave excitations in the frequency ranges of 0.5Hz to 1.0Hz. (3) By comparing the vehicle motions of two cases of different ballast conditions, we learned that dynamic features of the ballast track brings no significant difference on the vehicle dynamics of those cases. (4) Finding reasonable match between the experimental results and analytical results obtained from the simulation developed by the authors, we further investigated the possibility of derailment by the sine wave excitations in the frequency ranges of 0.5Hz to 1.0Hz and found that vehicle was to be derailed by giving larger excitation amplitudes than those given in the experiment.

The physical characteristics of a human finger are important in the work by hand. Therefore, the physical and numerical modeling of fingertip is useful for the design of various equipments, for example, a handrail of stairs, a robot hand, an operation simulator, and so on. In this study, "Coulomb friction", "absorption by fingerprint and sweat" and "elasticity of finger" are considered as the element of the friction characteristics. The aim of this study is to express the force by these characteristics as function model and to make the physical fingertip model. At first, the force by friction and absorption are measured, and the contact area between fingertip and board is calculated. Next, the function of friction force with respect to vertical force acting on the contact surface between fingertip and board is suggested. Finally, the actual finger model is made and the friction force is modeled to the function.

The poor operation for information systems such as car navigation systems may result in the visual workload. To reduce the visual workload produced by information systems and their use during vehicle operation, we propose a user-adaptive vehicle information interface with a reconfigured navigation sequence. We propose the information assistance interface which recommends a preferred content in short time without following the hierarchical steps because of the hierarchical structure of most car navigation systems. Our proposed user-adaptive interface consists of user modeling using a hidden Markov model (HMM) and symbol matching which is the reconfiguration of a navigation sequence. The interface learns a user's navigation patterns based on accumulated navigation sequences. The navigation sequence is reconfigured by the user model and a clue. The symbol matching is performed in compliance with the user's selection and the navigation sequence is recommended to the user. Experimental results showed that reconfiguring the navigation sequence and switches reduced navigation reaction time.
