Spiders can be carried out to sea by wind (ballooning on silk) or floods (on flotsam), but this is rarely observed. Here, we report on two wolf spider (Lycosidae) species, Arctosa fujiii Tanaka 1985 and Hygrolycosa umidicola Tanaka 1978, found at sea within 400 m of the coast of Tokyo Bay in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. These are two of the few examples of spiders found in coastal waters of Japan.

At present, only one Stertinius species, S. kumadai Logunov, Ikeda & Ono 1997, is known from Japan. In this paper, a new species, S. ryukyuensis sp. nov., is described and compared with S. kumadai, which is redescribed. Despite similarities in general appearance, the two species can be separated based on the morphology of retrolateral tibial apophysis and male cheliceral teeth, as well as the position of large spermathecal chamber.

A large-sized species of Hyleoglomeris collected from Shiga Prefecture, Central Japan, was discriminated from the described species known from Japan and surrounding areas by our careful examination of external body structure as well as male telopods. The new species is similar to H. stuxbergi from Japan, but can be distinguished from the latter by the following combination of characters: syncoxital lobe widely bifid forming two sublobes which are extended ventrolaterad (vs. narrowly bifid forming a pair of sublobes extended ventrad in H. stuxbergi); syncoxital horns slightly converging to each other (vs. almost parallel in H. stuxbergi); femoral trichostele slightly curved mesad (vs. strongly bent laterad in H. stuxbergi). On the base of these differences, the species is herein described as Hyleoglomeris awaumi Kuroda, Susukida & Eguchi, sp. nov. Our COI-based phylogenetic tree involving H. awaumi and other five congeneric Japanese species also shows the genetic distinctiveness of the new species. In addition, our analysis further suggests that Japanese Hyleoglomeris is non-monophyletic.

A new pill millipede species, Hyleoglomeris magy sp. nov., is described from Okinawa and adjacent islands, Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan. The new species is mainly characterized by its large body (maximum length: 12.1mm) and general light yellowish-brown coloration marked with pairs of blackish spots. The general appearance of the new species resembles that of Hyleoglomeris hongkhraiensis Golovatch & Panha 2015, but can be distinguished from this species by the number of striae on the thoracic shield (typically 8–10, with 3 or 4 crossing the dorsum, vs 7 or 8 in total with 4 or 5 crossing the dorsum) and the shape of the telopod (femur strongly bulged distally, vs not bulged). An identification key to all five species of Hyleoglomeris known to occur in the Ryukyu Archipelago is also provided.

Pandiculation within spiders has only recently been discovered - the first record of this habit among Protostomia – and it has only been demonstrated in one species (Cyclosa argenteoalba). We report here four further araneoid species i.e. Argiope bruennichi, Cyrtophora ikomosanensis, Trichonephila clavata (all Araneidae), and Nihonhimea japonica (Theridiidae) exhibiting pandiculation in or on their own webs. These records suggest that pandiculation is widely distributed at least among the superfamily Araneoidea, members of which generally construct aerial webs and wait in ambush for a long period.

Japanese spiders of the genus Theridiosoma (Araneae: Theridiosomatidae) were revised with redescription of T. epeiroides Bösenberg & Strand 1906 and description of four new species, namely: T. dissimulatum sp. nov., T. paludicolum sp. nov., T. fulvum sp. nov., and T. alboannulatum sp. nov. The internal morphology of the female genitalia of T. epeiroides is illustrated in this study for the first time. Males of the new species can be distinguished from their congeners by the morphology of the embolic apophyses or the posterior edge of the embolic division on the male palp. Females of the former three species can be differentiated from their related species by the shape of the contour formed by interior edges of a pair of sclerotized processes on the posterior edge of the genital plate. The latter species can be distinguished from the allied species by the angular lateral corners of the genital plate and overall shape of the genitalia (longer than wide).

This paper describes field-based observations of male-male agonistic behavior in a longlegged sac spider Cheiracanthium eutittha (Araneae: Cheiracanthidae). Males of the species exhibited a characteristic agonistic behavior, where two males hung from leaves with a dragline, with all of their long legs entangled with each other and pushed each other’s body aggressively. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first video-based report of male-male agonistic behavior associated with usage of elongated legs in this spider family.

The lithobiomorph centipede Lithobius (Lithobius) forficatus (Linnaeus 1758) is here reported for the first time in mainland Japan. All specimens were collected in Obihiro City, eastern Hokkaido, Japan. This species has a rather widely morphological variation and seems to inhabit synanthropic areas. The present study is the first record of indoor invasion of lithobiomorph species in Japan.

Parasitism by the ichneumonid ectoparasitoid, Brachyzapus nikkoensis, on the agelenid spider, Allagelena opulenta is recorded for the second time with the first voucher specimen. The attacked host was an adult in contrast to the exclusive utilization of juveniles of the main host, Agelena silvatica. All published records of parasitism upon Agelena silvatica are from spring to early summer, and therefore this finding of parasitism in the end of September, would be consistent with B. nikkoensis shifting its hosts in accordance with their body size, seasonal prevalence and their availability, as previously suggested.

Understanding the hard tick (Acari: Ixodida) fauna of the Iriomote cat (Prionailurus bengalensis iriomotensis Imaizumi 1967), an endangered species, is important for ecosystem conservation. However, there are no comprehensive reports on this topic. In this study, literature on the composition of tick species infesting Iriomote cats between 1975 and 2012 were compared. This study also reviewed on tick-borne pathogens found on Iriomote Island. Ticks Amblyomma testudinarium Koch 1844, Haemaphysalis hystricis Supino 1897, Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann 1901, and Asiatic blue ticks (Rhipicephalus [Boophilus] microplus Canestrini 1888) were identified from Iriomote cats. Asiatic blue ticks were identified in 1975 and 1983–1985, whereas H. longicornis was identified from Iriomote cats for the first time in 2011–2012. Amblyomma testudinarium and H. hystricis were identified from Iriomote cats throughout the study period. Gene fragments of Anaplasma bovis Dumler et al. 2001, Babesia gibsoni Patton 1910, Bartonella henselae Brenner et al. 1993, Ehrlichia canis Donatien and Lestoquard 1935, Hepatozoon felis Patton 1908, and Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum were detected in ticks and/or animals such as domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris Linnaeus 1758), domestic cats (Felis catus Linnaeus 1758) and Iriomote cats on Iriomote Island. However, because the same genotypes of tick-borne pathogens were unknown or have not been detected in animal and tick species, the transmission network of tick-borne pathogens between hosts and ticks on Iriomote Island is unknown. Further studies are needed to understand the network structure of host-tick-pathogens on Iriomote Island, based on accurate identification of the pathogen genotype, and the risk of tick-borne pathogens in the Iriomote cat.

Rearing of animals from one generation to the next is important in many biological studies. In this study, we aimed to develop efficient methods for rearing multiple generations of orb-web spiders (Cyclosa argenteoalba), testing three methods. First, we examined isolated rearing with aphid supplied by hand. Second, we tested mass rearing. We also collected various insect species from the field using light trap and supplied them by hand. Both methods failed, perhaps because of the inappropriate aphid (Uroleucon formosanum) and insufficient quantity of prey supplied in the first and second tests, respectively. For the third method, we mass reared with abundant prey directly supplied from light traps into the terrariums located outside. This method successfully raised hatchlings to adults, and the eggs produced from these adults also matured. The development time of wintering and non-wintering cohorts was 150.2‐195.0 days and 24.0‐76.3 days, respectively.
