Karyotypes of three spinous loaches, Cobitis biwae, C. taenia taenia and C. taenia striata from western Japan were investigated. As the result, chromosome polymorphisms and polyploid (tetraploid) were observed in these species. (1) C. biwae: Diploid specimens showed 48 chromosomes in 2n number. There were three types in chromosome constitutions such as 22M+20SM, ST+6A, 20M+20SM, ST+8A and 20m+18SM, ST+10A. On the other hand, teraploid specimens were characterized by 96 chromosomes which consisted of 38M+54SM, ST+20A. (2) C. taenia taenia: Diploid specimens with 50 chromosomes were characterized by 12M+4SM+34A. In the tetraploid forms, two types of individuals with 86 and 94 chromosome numbers were foud. These complements were made up of 32M+32SM, ST+22A in the former, and 26M+32SM, ST+36A in the latter. (3) C. taenia striata: Diploid form was the same as that of C. taenia taenia, whereas tetraploid form possessed 98 chromosomes consisting of 20M+22SM, ST+56A. (4) The geographical distribution on each group with different karyotypes showed that they have their own habitats forming respective isolated associations. Systematics and speciation in three species of Cobitidae were discussed on the bases of the karyotypic differentiation and habitat segregation.

東京湾において漁獲したクロアナゴ 189 個体とダイナンアナゴ 448 個体について,耳石横断切片法によって年齢を査定した結果,クロアナゴの年齢は 1+から 6+の範囲であり,2+から 4+までの年齢群が優占していた。ダイナンアナゴは,0+から 11+の範囲であり,特に 5+から 8+の個体が主体を成していた。ダイナンアナゴは,6+以上の全長 1000 mm を超える個体も多く,マアナゴと比べても大きく成長する魚種であると考えられた。両種の雄の割合は,2-6% であり,性比が雌に著しく偏っていた。

マアジの行動様式を把握するため日本海佐渡島羽茂地先の水深 45 m に設置された人工魚礁において,超音波バイオテレメトリー(V9P-1H, VEMCO 社製)を全長 30 cm のマアジへ外部装着し,追跡を行った。追跡は 2008 年 6~7 月の間に 1 尾ずつ 7 回行った。マアジは日中には人工魚礁や天然礁の天端から高さ 10 m 程度に留まり,夜間は水深 5~10 m の表層を遊泳しながら礁から離脱し,早朝,礁に移動し,日中,礁に蝟集するといった明確な日周行動を示した。

The object of the study was to clarify from an ecological point of view that such an inconstant lighting condition which goes on and off with a short cyclic time as the intermittent or flickering light would give a different stimulation from that of a constant light to fish. Horse-mackerel Trachuras japonicus were used soon after being caught by a stationary trap net for a series of experiments, and the observation of the fish school's behavior was continuously carried on for a period of 90 days, during which experimental fish were replaced with new ones everyday. Thus, the total number of fish used for the study amounted to 1, 200.As a result, it has been confirmed that not only is there a remarkable difference between fish-school behavior in response to inconstant light and that to constant light, but also their behavior varies in great deal with the blinking frequency of the inconstant light.

発光波長が異なる 4 種(赤,緑,青,UV)の光拡散型 LED の点滅光を利用した魚類侵入抑制装置を製作し,マダイ稚魚に対する侵入抑制効果を水槽実験で調べた。5 分間の最高侵入抑制率は赤 88%,緑 96.7%,青 99.7% で顕著な侵入抑制効果があり,点滅 UV の侵入抑制効果は低かった。青の点滅光で点滅周期と放射照度を変化させたとき,1~10 Hz の点滅周期で侵入抑制効果が高く,0.3 Hz では侵入抑制効果が顕著に低く,実験条件下では放射照度を増大しても侵入抑制効果は必ずしも増加しなかった。

The chum salmon populations collected from 21 rivers in Japan were analyzed by using as markers the three genes, Idh-A2, Idh-B2, and Ldh-Al, controlling IDH and LDH isozymes. (1) No differences in gene frequencies at the three loci were found between the sexes or between the years of catch. (2) Any two of the 21 river populations showed clear differences of gene frequencies, indicating that they are independent of each other. (3) The chum salmon populations in Japan could be divided into at least 3 groups: Hokkaido group, and the Pacific Ocean and Japan Sea groups of Honshu. (4) A geographical cline of gene frequencies was observed in each of the Pacific Ocean and Japan Sea groups of Honshu, the phenomenon suggests that there has been a mixing of chum salmon individuals between neighboring rivers, though on a small scale.

養殖イサキの死後変化に及ぼす致死条件(延髄刺殺,苦悶死,温度ショック,脊髄破壊)と保存温度(氷蔵,5, 10, 15, 20℃)の影響を検討した。致死条件実験では ATP 量,IMP 量,K 値,硬直指数の経時変化は脊髄破壊が最も遅かった。夏期(飼育水温 25℃)と冬期(15℃)のイサキを用いた保存温度実験における死後変化は冬期群が夏期群に比較して遅く,10℃ 保存で K 値,硬直指数の上昇が最も遅延した。養殖イサキの死後変化の遅延は飼育水温に関らず,保存 24 時間以内で脊髄破壊後 10℃ 保存が最適であった。

The free neuromasts were morphologically investigated in the larvae of two cyprinid fish, Zacco platypus and Gnathopogon elongatus caerulescens. In Z. platypus that mainly inhabits rivers, cupulae increased in length and became flat in shape (the so-called nail type) along with growth in the larval stage. Afterwards, the cupulae became shorter during the juvenile stage. The short and nail type cupulae of Z. platypus seem to be adaptive to rheotactic swimming. On the other hand, in G. elongatus caerulescens that lives in lakes, the cupulae were long and did not change in length until the 72nd day after hatching in the juvenile stage, but it changed in shape from a stick to a flat type like marine algae (laminaria). The surface area of these cupulae is larger than that of Z. platypus, and therefore the cupulae of G. elongatus caerulescens will be more receptive to mechanical stimulus by water flow. The photographs (SEM) of neuromast showed that the direction of the best physiological sensitivity of sensory hair cells coincided with the minor axis of the outline of the neuromast area, namely the bending direction of cupulae. From these results, it was considered that the neuro-masts of G. elongates caerulescens have a high sensitivity not only regarding their swimming behavior but also for perceiving weak water movements caused by prey and predators.

Proteases were extracted from antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, with borate buffer at pH 8.0 They were partially purified by ammonium sulfate fractionation and gel filtration through Sephadex G-100. Further. purification performed with chromatohraphy on DEAE-Sephadex A-50 separated them into two trypsin-like proteases and a protease of unknown specificity. The trypsin-like proteases were characterized by their hydrolysis of TAME as well as the inhibition of the activity in the presence of soy-bean trypsin inhibitor. However, the inhibition of the two tryptic activities by PMSF was less than that in the case of bovine trypsin. All three proteases showed optimal activity at the physiological pH (around 8.0) of krill body fluids. They were stable only in an alkaline medium and digested carp actomyosin. These results suggest that they are responsible for the rapid autolysis of krill body protein which occurs after catching.

This report describes the mechanics of automatic circulating angling machines for skipjack devised by the authors and a result of angling tests. These devices can economize the angling space, that is the fish caught are gathered at one space so that the process from angling to storage is systematized. The authers would like to report the result of series of the experiments. 1) Two kinds of angling machines were made for experiments, one of which is the vertical circulating machine (S.V.M) and the other is the horizontal circulating machine (S.H.M). 2) Angling tests with both machines were carried out during the period from 1965 to 1975 in the southern area of the Pacific Ocean. There was no difference in angling ability between the two machines and well-trained fishermen under the same catching conditions. 3) The S.H.M proved to be more efficient than the S.V.M in performance other than angling. 4) It is ncessary to improve the S.H.M to prevent unhooking, before it is used practically. Also the bulwark of the vessel should be remodeled to fit the S.H.M.
