The influence of social factors on visual attention is an increasingly important area in experimental psychology. However, there has been a little investigation of how self-construal affects how spatial attention selects visual information. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the influence of self-construal on the breadth of attentional spotlight. The Eriksen flanker task was employed to ascertain whether the interference from task-irrelevant stimuli flanking a to-be-identified target is changed following self-construal manipulations. Furthermore, the inter-stimulus distances between flankers were varied in order to measure the extent to which the breadth of the attentional spotlight is modulated after the self-construal manipulations. Results suggest that changes in self-construal modulate the breadth of the attentional spotlight. Moreover, the findings cast new light on how attentional selection can be modulated by high-level, social factors.

This study investigated comprehension processes of Japanese sentences which included an adjective-noun phrase. Specifically, we examined whether evaluation of a consistent semantic relation between an adjective and a noun in a sentence of reading material was suspended until the argument structure of the sentence was constructed. Twenty-three participants read two types of sentences: acceptable sentences that contained a plausible adjective-noun phrase, and unacceptable sentences that contained an implausible adjective-noun phrase. In comparison with the acceptable sentences, phrase-by-phrase reading time for the unacceptable sentences was prolonged not only at the position of adjective-noun phrase but also at the position of the verb that constructed the propositional representation of the sentence. This result suggests that evaluation of a semantic relation of an adjective-noun phrase is postponed until the coherent argument structure is constructed.

Initials of first names of men and women were compared across different countries (Japan, USA, Germany, and South Korea) and different periods (Japanese adults in 2006, and college students in 2008 and 2017). Results suggested a trend in which the letters, “J,” “R,” and “T” are more popular in men than in women, and that “A,” “C,” “E,” and “M” are more popular in women than in men, whereas popular first names differ among countries and change across periods even within the same country (Japan). The phonetic sounds of the initials popular for men give a “hard” impression, and those of the initials popular with women are perceived as “soft.”

Lady Gaga's fourth CD album ARTPOP, designed by American pop artist Jeff Koons, adopted one of my illusion works, namely, Hatpin urchin, as the main inside design. This occurrence was significant for the study of visual illusion in the following three senses: first, it drew people's attention to visual illusion; second, the chosen illusion was novel; and third, for the first time in its history, visual illusion was recognized as ubiquitous.

In the previous article (Kosaki, Shi, Matsui, Shimbo, & Fujimaki, 2015) we reviewed studies regarding how animals represent temporal information in classical conditioning. In this article, we first review various issues pertaining to interval timing in operant conditioning, with the main goal of providing a concise summary of procedural and theoretical developments in interval timing research. In the remainder of the article, we will review recent empirical findings and theories about the neural substrates underlying timing mechanisms both in classical and operant conditioning, and discuss how the hippocampus and striatum might contribute to different aspects of temporal information processing during conditioning. We then argue that the potentially different timing mechanisms implemented by the hippocampus and the striatum, as evidenced by the recent discovery of time cells in the hippocampus and consistent findings regarding involvement of the striatum in interval timing, might each be considered to constitute a part of functionally dissociable multiple memory systems that have been described elsewhere in the literature, particularly in the context of spatial learning and the organisation of voluntary behaviour.

The recording of field potentials in hippocampal slice preparations is widely used for the purpose of elucidating the biological basis of memory function, Since the hippocampus has a unique structure of cellular and fiber layers, not only action potentials but also postsynaptic potentials can be clearly recorded as field potentials using a glass electrode with a relatively large tip. That the mechanism of polarity of field potentials recorded from synaptic layers differs from that recorded from cell layers is explained by the concepts of current sink and source.

Visual illusions in animals are important to study because they magnify how the perceptual system in each animal works. This paper reviews comparative studies on visual illusions in birds (pigeons and bantam chickens) and humans. Not only similarities but also dissimilarities in the perception of illusory figures between these animals have been shown, suggesting that the same physical environments may induce different visual worlds among the species.

An EEG-based brain–machine interface (BMI), "Neurocommunicator" has been developed by the authors research group in AIST in order to support communication of patients with severer motor deficits. The user can select one of registered messages in real time from electroencephalography (EEG) data and express it via his/her avatar. Integration of neuroscience and psychology will contribute to the future development, at hardware, software and service levels, of Neurocommunicator toward a commercial product.
