Amphidromous gobies of Sicyopterus (Gobiidae: Sicydiinae) are distributed in tropical, subtropical, and temperate streams in the Indo-Pacific region. Two species, Sicyopterus japonicus (Tanaka, 1909) and Sicyopterus lagocephalus (Pallas, 1770), are known from Japan. In the present study, two specimens of an additional species were collected in Okinawa Island, in southern Japan. We compared morphologies of the type series of Sicyopterus longifilis de Beaufort, 1912 and Sicyopterus brevis de Beaufort, 1912 collected in Indonesia, with the specimens from Okinawa Island to revise the taxonomy of these species and to identify the Okinawan specimens. Syntypes of S. longifilis and S. brevis share many characters, including a unique mouth morphology. Although fin morphologies, tooth number, and the shape of the urogenital papilla differ between S. longifilis and S. brevis syntypes, these amount to normal sexual dimorphism of sicydiine gobies. De Beaufort collected his specimens at the same locality on the same date. We conclude that the syntypes of S. longifilis and S. brevis are actually males and females of same species. Therefore, they are subjective synonyms, and we give precedence to the name S. longifilis as the first reviser under Article 24.2 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature 1999). The two specimens from Okinawa Island were identified as S. longifilis and this is the first record of this species from Japan.

Flowability is one of the most important parameters of pharmaceutical powders during the handling and preparation of solid dosage forms. It is especially important to characterize the very poor flowability that some herbal powders show. In this study, the flowability of a traditional herbal powder formulated as an antitussive and expectorant was examined. This formulated herbal powder and two excipient powders, precipitated calcium carbonate and anhydrous dibasic calcium phosphate, were evaluated using two instruments. A shearing test, a wall friction test and a dynamic flowability test were performed with Powder Rheometer FT4 (Freeman Technology, Tewkesbury, UK). Internal friction and wall friction were measured. BFE (basic flow energy), SI (stability index) and FRI (flow rate index) were also measured. Angle of repose, bulk density, tapped density, angle of spatula and cohesiveness were measured with a Powder Tester (Hosokawa Micron, Osaka, Japan). The results were used to calculate Carr's Index values and compressibility, which in turn revealed that this herbal powder had poor flowability.The other aim of this study was to develop a new method of evaluating the flowability of powder through a medicine spoon. Two evaluation methods, the spoon-tap test and the consecutive medicine spoon test, were developed to design a new medicine spoon for the herbal powder. The results of these tests indicated that a polyethylene medicine spoon with holes at the bottom could reduce the adhesiveness to a medicine spoon of the formulated herbal powder.

This research presents the early life history stages of Malo maxima, a recently described tropical Australian cubozoan from the family Carukiidae, from sexual fertilisation to metamorphosis including planula, polyp, asexual reproductive strategies and young medusa. We discuss the similarities between M. maxima and two closely related carukiid species from Japan and Australia including morphology and behaviours previously undocumented in the class Cubozoa. All three carukiids can reproduce by mono-disk strobilation, a strategy common to all other orders of the class Scyphozoa but only recently described in Cubozoa.

This paper reconsiders Yumiko Ehara’s examination on a series of discussions in the Japanese women’s movement since 1970s, to explore sociological implication of the issue raised by her. Through critical investigation into these discussions, Ehara articulated certain kind of diffi culty that might be found out even today in our discussions of social problems about gender inequality. In rereading Ehara’s examination, this paper suggests that change of people’s lifestyle and change of society are related to change of discourses in and through which our everyday life has been organized. In order to produce new discourses, we have to unravel the interconnection of various concepts in our everyday language use activities and reorganize them in a new way. Ehara’s concept of “Kenryoku-sayo” means regulatory power of discourses that prevents us from unraveling and reorganizing such interconnection of concepts related to gender. Based on Ehara’s examination, this paper suggests that such discoursive power not only regulates our everyday life but also is activated in and through our own everyday language use activities.

Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-Cas-based genome editing technology has enabled manipulation of the embryonic genome. Unbiased whole genome sequencing comparing parents to progeny has revealed that the rate of Cas9-induced mutagenesis in mouse embryos is indistinguishable from the background rate of de novo mutation. However, establishing the best practice to confirm on-target alleles of interest remains a challenge. We believe that improvement in editing strategies and screening methods for founder mice will contribute to the generation of quality-controlled animals, thereby ensuring reproducibility of results in animal studies and advancing the 3Rs (replacement, reduction, and refinement).
