Multiple host molecules are known to be involved in the cellular entry of filoviruses, including Ebola virus (EBOV); T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain 1 (TIM-1) and Niemann-Pick C1 (NPC1) have been identified as attachment and fusion receptors, respectively. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the entry process have not been fully understood. We found that TIM-1 and NPC1 colocalized and interacted in the intracellular vesicles where EBOV glycoprotein (GP)-mediated membrane fusion occurred. Interestingly, a TIM-1-specific monoclonal antibody (MAb), M224/1, prevented GP-mediated membrane fusion and also interfered with the binding of TIM-1 to NPC1, suggesting that the interaction between TIM-1 and NPC1 is important for filovirus membrane fusion. Moreover, MAb M224/1 efficiently inhibited the cellular entry of viruses from all known filovirus species. These data suggest a novel mechanism underlying filovirus membrane fusion and provide a potential cellular target for antiviral compounds that can be universally used against filovirus infections.

1991年から1994年の間に経験したFournier's gangrene患者5名について, 年齢, 基礎疾患, 誘因, 病変の範囲, 検出された細菌, 治療法及び予後について検討した.患者の平均年齢は47歳で, 基礎疾患として糖尿病2名, 全身性エリテマトーデス1名, 慢性アルコール中毒1名, 末期の多発性骨髄腫1名であった.発症の誘因は創感染が2名, 尿道留置カテーテルが2名であり, 1名では明らかなものはなかった.外科的処置として, 2名に広範囲のデブリードマンを施行し, 後に分割植皮術を要した.3名では, 最小限の壊死組織除去後に罹患部皮下に多数のペンローズ・ドレーンを留置し, 消毒液で洗浄した.このうち2名は病変の発赤, 腫脹が急速に軽減し, 皮膚欠損を残さずに治癒した.1名は末期の多発性骨髄腫患者で全身状態は極めて不良であり, ドレーン留置後, 炎症所見は軽減傾向にあったが, 敗血症, DICを併発して死亡した.外科的処置として広範囲のデブリードマンが一般的に施行されているが, 皮膚欠損を生じることが多く, 皮膚移植の必要性や二次的創感染等の欠点を有する.壊死組織の限局的な除去と皮下への多数のドレーンの留置の組み合わせは, 皮膚欠損も最小限で済み, 治療効果も広範囲のデブリドマンと比べて遜色がなかった.本法は, 広範囲デブリードマンに変えて選択しうる有効な治療法であると思われた.

We assessed longitudinal relationships between baseline testosterone and muscle mass changes in Japanese men. Data were collected from community-dwelling 957 adult men who participated in a longitudinal study of ageing biennially from 1997–2010. Appendicular muscle mass (AMM) was measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at baseline and follow-up examinations. The cut-off point of sarcopenia was defined as a skeletal muscle index (AMM/height2) < 6.87 kg/m2. Total testosterone (TT) and free testosterone (FT) were measured with a radioimmunoassay. The calculated FT (cFT) was determined with a formula using albumin, TT, and sex hormone-binding globulin levels. We analyzed 4,187 or 2,010 cumulative data points using generalized estimating equations. Low TT was not associated with sarcopenia. Low cFT (odds ratio = 2.14, 95% confidence interval: 1.06–4.33) and FT (odds ratio = 1.83, 95% confidence interval: 1.04–3.22) were associated with sarcopenia. Low FT may be a predictor of risk for muscle loss in Japanese men.

We investigated the transcriptional regulation of Aicda (which encodes AID) in class switch–inducible CH12F3-2 cells and found that Aicda regulation involved derepression by several layers of positive regulatory elements in addition to the 5′ promoter region. The 5′ upstream region contained functional motifs for the response to signaling by cytokines, the ligand for the costimulatory molecule CD40 or stimuli that activated the transcription factor NF-κB. The first intron contained functional binding elements for the ubiquitous silencers c-Myb and E2f and for the B cell–specific activator Pax5 and E-box-binding proteins. Our results show that Aicda is regulated by the balance between B cell–specific and stimulation-responsive elements and ubiquitous silencers.

東日本大震災により発生した福島第一原子力発電所事故においては,海水等冷却材の原子炉注入により,原子炉およびタービン建屋内の地下の溜まり水や,敷地内のトレンチなどに放射性物質を多く含んだ数万トン規模の高レベル汚染水が発生し,作業障害や環境汚染を起こしており,今後 20 万トン以上になると予想されている。2011 年 12 月の時点で,循環注水冷却システムにより冷温停止が達成されているが,固体廃棄物(ゼオライト,不溶性フェロシアン化物スラッジ,結晶性シリコチタネート (CST)) の処理および処分は未定である。特に,汚染水中のセシウムの高除染用吸着剤として使用されている不溶性フェロシアン化物および結晶性シリコチタネート (CST) の処理・処分に関しては,過去にもほとんど実績がないことから,今後の重要な課題となっている。本稿では,循環注水冷却システムの構成と進捗状況,およびセシウムの高除染用吸着剤としての不溶性フェロシアン化物および CST の物性および Cs に対する選択的な吸着特性について紹介し,これら固体廃棄物の処理・処分および今後の課題について述べる。

The crystal structure analysis of glycerol was revisited and the hydrogen atoms of three hydroxy groups were observed. A hydrogen-bonded 3D network structure of glycerol was created by the formation of a wave-like sheet structure and its assembly through hydrogen bonding.

This paper aims to extract lessons from archivists' experience of appraising electronic records that are likely to have wider application in the preservation of other digital materials, including scientific data. It relies mainly on the work of the Appraisal Task Force of the InterPARES project on long-term preservation of authentic electronic records to develop a picture of the process of appraisal. It concludes that the aspects of assessment of authenticity, determination of the feasibility of preservation, and monitoring electronic records as they are maintained in the live environment are likely to find counterparts in attempts to appraise digital objects for long-term preservation in the scientific community. It also argues that the activities performed during appraisal constitute the first vital step in the process of preservation of digital materials.

The dynamics of ventricular fibrillation (VF) has been studied extensively, and the initiation mechanism of VF has been elucidated to some extent. However, the stochastic dynamical nature of sustained VF remains unclear so far due to the complexity of high dimensional chaos in a heterogeneous system. In this paper, various statistical mechanical properties of sustained VF are studied numerically in 2D Beeler-Reuter-Drouhard-Roberge (BRDR) model with normal and modified ionic current conductance. The nature of sustained VF is analyzed by measuring various fluctuations of spatial phase singularity (PS) such as velocity, lifetime, the rates of birth and death. It is found that the probability density function (pdf) for lifetime of PSs is independent of system size. It is also found that the hyper-Gamma distribution serves as a universal pdf for the counting number of PSs for various system sizes and various parameters of our model tissue under VF. Further, it is demonstrated that the nonlinear Langevin equation associated with a hyper-Gamma process can mimic the pdf and temporal variation of the number of PSs in the 2D BRDR model.

This paper first presents the following as obstacles to the generational switch of industry standards: (1) magnitude of installed base, (2) ample scope for technological progress based on existing standards, (3) limited applicability of accumulated technology to new standards, and (4) lack of investment capability. Next, we examine strategies to overcome such obstacles and migrate to new standards. Finally, we analyze the cooperation between a company that advocates new standards and one that produces complementary products when implementing those standards through the case study of the family console game industry. The results of analysis demonstrate that Nintendo has a traditional self-reliance strategy, whereas new entrant Sony has a collaborative one.

The relationship between innovation and consumption among internet users is not uniform. This research shows different relationships between innovation and consumption in terms of the level of involvement in music from an internet survey of 1,000 music users. We measure the level of involvement in music using the two levels of components of involvement suggested by Lastovicka and Gardner (1979). For the analysis, we divide the samples into the “high involvement” and “low involvement” groups and examine each group for their relationship between innovation, indicated by “making one's own music and posting one's songs or performances on the internet,” and consumption, indicated by “average amount of money spent on music downloads per year.” The results show that there are heterogeneous characteristics among high and low levels of involvement groups in the aspects of consumption and innovation behavior. In the low involvement group, users actively innovating are also actively consuming. However, in the high involvement group, there is no clear relationship between innovation and consumption. To put it concretely, the consumption per innovating user is approximately four times more than that of non-innovating users in the low involvement group, but it is about the same in the high involvement group. In addition, the consumption per innovating user in the low involvement group is approximately two times more than that of innovating users in the high involvement group.

We present a quenched lattice QCD calculation of the alpha and beta parameters of the proton decay matrix element. The simulation is carried out using the Wilson quark action at three values of the lattice spacing in the range a[approximate]0.1-0.064 fm to study the scaling violation effect. We find only mild scaling violation when the lattice scale is determined by the nucleon mass. We obtain in the continuum limit,

We present a model-independent calculation of hadron matrix elements for all dimension-6 operators associated with baryon number violating processes using lattice QCD. The calculation is performed with the Wilson quark action in the quenched approximation at β=6/g2=6.0 on a 282×48×80 lattice. Our results cover all the matrix elements required to estimate the partial lifetimes of (proton,neutron)→(π,K,η)+(ν̅ ,e+,μ+) decay modes. We point out the necessity of disentangling two form factors that contribute to the matrix element; previous calculations did not make the separation, which led to an underestimate of the physical matrix elements. With a correct separation, we find that the matrix elements have values 3–5 times larger than the smallest estimates employed in phenomenological analyses of the nucleon decays, which could give strong constraints on several GUT models. We also find that the values of the matrix elements are comparable with the tree-level predictions of the chiral Lagrangian.

We carry out a feasibility study for the lattice QCD calculation of the neutron electric dipole moment (NEDM) in the presence of the theta term. We develop the strategy to obtain the nucleon EDM from the CP- odd electromagnetic form factor F-3 at small theta, in which NEDM is given by lim(q2 -> 0 theta)F(3)(q(2))/(2m(N)), where q is the momentum transfer and m(N) is the nucleon mass. We first derive a formula which relates F-3, a matrix element of the electromagnetic current between nucleon states, with vacuum expectation values of nucleons and/ or the current. In the expansion of theta, the parity-odd part of the nucleon- current- nucleon three-point function contains contributions not only from the parity-odd form factors but also from the parity-even form factors multiplied by the parity-odd part of the nucleon two- point function, and, therefore, the latter contribution must be subtracted to extract F-3. We then perform an explicit lattice calculation employing the domain- wall quark action with the renormalization group improved gauge action in quenched QCD at a(-1) similar or equal to 2 GeV on a 16(3) x 32 x 16 lattice. At the quark mass m(f)a = 0: 03, corresponding to m(pi)/m(rho) similar or equal to 0:63, we accumulate 730 configurations, which allow us to extract the parityodd part in both two- and three- point functions. Employing two different Dirac gamma matrix projections, we show that a consistent value for F-3 cannot be obtained without the subtraction described above. We obtain F-3(q(2) similar or equal to 0:58 GeV2)/(2m(N))= -0:024(5) e . fm for the neutron and F-3(q(2) similar or equal to 0: 58 GeV2)/(2mN) = 0:021(6)e . fm for the proton.
