Somatic cells can be reprogrammed into pluripotent stem cells by introducing a combination of several transcription factors. The induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells from a patient's somatic cells could be useful source of cells for drug discovery and cell transplantation therapies. However, most human iPS cells are made by viral vectors, such as retrovirus and lentivirus, which integrate the reprogramming factors into host genomes and may increase the risk of tumor formation. Studies of the mechanisms underlying the reprogramming and establishment of non-integration methods contribute evidence to resolve the safety concerns associated with iPS cells. On the other hand, patient-specific iPS cells have already been established and used for recapitulating disease pathology.

The irregular strip packing problem is a combinatorial optimization problem that requires to place a given set of two-dimensional polygons within a rectangular container so that no polygon overlaps with other polygons or protrudes from the container, where each polygon is not necessarily convex. The container has a fixed width, while its length can change so that all polygons are placed in it. The objective is to find a layout of the set of polygons that minimizes the length of the container. We propose an algorithm that separates overlapping polygons based on nonlinear programming, and an algorithm that swaps two polygons in a layout so as to find their new positions in the layout with the least overlap. We incorporate these algorithms as components into an iterated local search algorithm for the overlap minimization problem and then develop an algorithm for the irregular strip packing problem using the iterated local search algorithm. Computational comparisons on representative instances disclose that our algorithm is competitive with other existing algorithms. Moreover, our algorithm updates several best known results.

In most unconventional superconductors, the importance of antifer- romagnetic fluctuations is widely acknowledged. In addition, cuprate and iron-pnictide high-temperature superconductors often exhibit unidirectional (nematic) electronic correlations, including stripe and orbital orders, whose fluctuations may also play a key role for elec- tron pairing. In these materials, however, such nematic correlations are intertwined with antiferromagnetic or charge orders, preventing us to identify the essential role of nematic fluctuations. This calls for new materials having only nematicity without competing or co- existing orders. Here we report systematic elastoresistance mea- surements in FeSe1−xSx superconductors, which, unlike other iron- based families, exhibit an electronic nematic order without accom- panying antiferromagnetic order. We find that the nematic transition temperature decreases with sulfur content x, whereas the nematic fluctuations are strongly enhanced. Near x 0.17, the nematic sus- ceptibility diverges towards absolute zero, revealing a nematic quan- tum critical point. The open source community (OSC) is a place to develop collective knowledge available to anyone, thereby inevitably engendering free riders. Despite this, many firms have contributed to OSCs. This study examines 10 Android smartphone manufacturers between 2010 and 2013 with regard to their (a) source code contributions and the relation of those contributions to (b) time to market as measured by the release of their first Android smartphones. The results of the analysis are divided into the following two groups: (A) a group that released smartphones faster than their competitors through source code contributions and (B) a group that made few source code contributions and was slower to release smartphones than group (A). In addition, in a few years, some firms were observed to have move from group (B) to group (A).

土に長期的に栄養水が侵入すると, 土の間隙中の土壌微生物と微生物がつくり出す代謝生成物が水の通り道を塞ぐ現象, いわゆるclogging (目詰まり) 現象が生じ, 土の透水性が低下することが知られている. そこで, 栄養水飽和浸透条件下での透水係数の長期変動を調べ, 深さ0~1cmの層において, 118日間でほぼ2オーダー透水係数が低下することを示した.透水係数低下の第一の原因は, 糸状菌の長い菌糸と微生物の代謝生成物による間隙の閉塞であり, 第二の原因は, グルコースから発生したメタンガスが118日間に表層に最大14%の気相率相当量が溶解せず気泡となって間隙中に閉塞されたことによるものであると説明された.

High-order nonlinear light–matter interactions in gases enable the generation of X-ray and attosecond light pulses, metrology and spectroscopy1. Optical nonlinearities in solid-state materials are particularly interesting for combining optical and electronic functions for high-bandwidth information processing2. Third-order nonlinear optical processes in silicon have been used to process optical signals with bandwidths greater than 1 GHz (ref. 2). However, fundamental physical processes for a silicon-based optical modulator in the terahertz bandwidth range have not yet been explored. Here, we demonstrate ultrafast phononic modulation of the optical index of silicon by irradiation with intense few-cycle femtosecond pulses. The anisotropic reflectivity modulation by the resonant Raman susceptibility at the fundamental frequency of the longitudinal optical phonon of silicon (15.6 THz) generates a frequency comb up to seventh order. All-optical >100 THz frequency comb generation is realized by harnessing the coherent atomic motion of the silicon crystalline lattice at its highest mechanical frequency.

There exists a variety of theories of the glass transition and many more numerical models. But because the models need built-in complexity to prevent crystallization, comparisons with theory can be difficult. We study the dynamics of a deeply supersaturated monodisperse four-dimensional (4D) hard-sphere fluid, which has no such complexity, but whose strong intrinsic geometrical frustration inhibits crystallization, even when deeply supersaturated. As an application, we compare its behavior to the mode-coupling theory (MCT) of glass formation. We find MCT to describe this system better than any other structural glass formers in lower dimensions. The reduction in dynamical heterogeneity in 4D suggested by a milder violation of the Stokes-Einstein relation could explain the agreement. These results are consistent with a mean-field scenario of the glass transition.

A general expression of the current-voltage characteristics of a ballistic nanowire field-effect transistor (FET) is derived. At T=0, the conductance, which is equal to the quantum conductance multiplied by the number of channels at zero bias, decreases stepwise toward current saturation as the drain bias is increased. The current-voltage characteristics of a single-wall carbon nanotube FET in ballistic conduction are discussed based on the band structure of the nanotube. When both the gate overdrive and the drain bias are equal to 1 V, the device made of a (19,0) nanotube and a 2-nm high-k gate insulator (epsilon=40epsilon(0)) flows a current of 183 muA, which amounts to a current density 48 times as large as the counterpart of a silicon device. The high performance originates from a high carrier density due to the enhanced gate capacitance, and a large carrier velocity caused by the large group velocity of the original graphene band. Quantum capacitance also plays an important role in the device's characteristics.

A formal approach for specifying and reasoning about earth-friendly logistics management systems is presented. To reduce fossil fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions resulting from transport, we must enhance the transport efficiency of trucks, which play an essential role as carriers in modern logistics services. This paper addresses the milk-run approach. It is one of the most effective and popular solutions to this problem, but it makes it be complicated to implement in a logistics management system. We propose a language for specifying the routes of trucks and an order relation between the requirements of routes and the possible routes of trucks. The former is formulated as process calculus and the latter selects suitable trucks according to their routes.
