High curvature micro lens array of 240-570 μm diameters and 110-270 μm heights has been fabricated by using UV-LED lithography and imprinting technique. Curved SU-8 structures were fabricated by backside exposure through thin glass substrate because UV-LED array light source has wide directivity characteristics of UV dose. The structure was transferred to Polydimethylsiloxsane (PDMS) mold. Micro lens array of photosensitive acrylic resin was fabricated by using the mold.

In order to design and develop electric power apparatus it is important to analyze electrical discharges, and a measurement of an electric field is greatly helpful to it. There are some methods for measuring the electric field. Among them a Pockels sensor is based on an optical method and has many advantages.There is a request to miniaturize a sensor from a view point of spatial resolution. An optical waveguide technique has been successfully introduced in Pockels sensor to achieve the spatial resolution of micrometers.As a senor for measuring electric field in space it must be confirmed about two characteristics. One is limitation of its caliblation in non-uniform fields and the other is its operation with space charges. Pockels sensors except for what in fixed envirornment must be calibrated under uniform field and it is surmised there is limitation. In consideration of discharge measurement charge attachiment on Pockels sensor is inevitable. In this paper these two points are examined.

We have developed a multichannel taste sensor with lipid membranes which can detect and quantify the basic taste substances in aqueous solution. The aim of the present study is to increase selectivity to adsorptive taste substances (bitter, umami and astringent taste substances) for quantification of taste by improving measuring methods. High selectivity to adsorptive taste substances is obtained by CPA measurement algorithm (CPA: Change of membrane Potential caused by Adsorption). High repeatability is also obtained by developing a cleaning technique of taste sensor.

We developed a bi-channel microfluidic device integrated with a four-probe electrode system to measure the trans-epithelial electrical resistance (TEER). Time course of TEER was monitored when the extracellular Ca2+ was removed and replenished both from the upper and lower channels. We showed that tight junctions were disrupted rapidly once Ca2+ was removed from the basal side. However, when Ca2+ was removed from the apical side such disruption progressed slowly. Upon replenishing Ca2+ content at the basal side the TEER recovery pace was also faster than the case of replenishing it at the apical side. We conclude that cell polarity needs to be taken into account during the process of Ca2+ removal/replacement in explaining the dynamics of tight junction disruption/recovery. These results indicate that our approach can be utilized in detecting cell polarity in real time and low invasion.

<p>The human error prevention system is realized by 3-point collation using a barcode reader. A new optical device consisting of Littrow prism and cylindrical lens, which are optically aligned with a built-in camera and an LED in a smartphone, has realized the smartphone with the same usability as the conventional barcode reader.</p>

Taste can be measured using a taste sensor, which shows different electrical potential patterns for each food. The sensor has eight kinds of lipid membranes. The present study is concerned with the long-term measurements of milk and sensory analysis of milk. Each membrane was preserved in standard milk, and the tastes of five kinds of commercial milk were measured using the sensor preserved for a period of one month to six months in the same manner. It was found that calibrated data was comparable with data obtained other days, and that the membranes were used reliably fbr six months. On the other hand, richness of sensory test showed a high correlation with the ratio of milk fat using chemical analysis, as seen from the correlation coefficient 0.829. It was also found that there is significant difference among the four samples by performing a Kramer test (α<0.01) and F test (α<0.05). We used multiple regression analysis on sensor responses by use of the ratio of milk fat and the heat treatment of milk, and consequently found a high correlation between channel 4 and them. The correlation coefficient was-0.986 between the sensory test and ch. 4. Therefore, it was concluded that richness, which is the main taste of milk, can be quantified using the taste sensor.

Conductive polymer coated micro-cantilever array made by reel-to-reel continuous fiber process as the electrical contact components for woven electronic textile was investigated. We report the novel cantilever releasing method using air injection and the results of patternable CYTOP and organic conductive polymer using nanoimprinting method. The conductive organic material used in this study is PEDOT:PSS (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(4-styrenesulfonate)). Micro-cantilever contact array is realized to compose the electrical circuit through the large area woven textile. The contact resistance of 480 Ω is hold on for over 500 times. Contact resistance measurements revealed that an electric current begins to flow with smaller contact force for PEDOT:PSS coated cantilever array structure than for PEDOT:PSS film structure. There is no appreciable wear on cantilever surface due to its movability after 103 cycles contact test with 0.5 N contact force. Based on these results, PEDOT:PSS coated micro-cantilever array have excellent potential as electrical contact components between weft and warp for woven electronic textile.

System scaling down in the viewpoint of both electrical blocks and physical interconnection is essential to wireless sensor nodes for layout-free and maintenance-free ubiquitous applications in wireless sensor networks (WSN). In this work, a piezoresistive planar MEMS sensor with the sensitivity of 0.2∼0.3 mV/V/g was developed for the monitoring of vibrations at low-frequency of a few Hz. To reduce power consumption of the system to the lowest limit as well as to reduce the quantity of electrical components, a fully-integrated low-power customized LSI with universal interface to sensors was designed and fabricated by using 0.18 µm 1.8V/3.3V 1P6M logic process for power management, data acquisition, data processing, and data transmission by RF signal. Power supply to the sensor can be managed by the customized LSI for reducing its power consumption. Output analog signal from the sensor can be obtained by the customized LSI through on-chip integrated amplifier and AD convertor. To reduce size of the system to the lowest limit, buried bump interconnection technology (B2it™) was introduced for the integration of above customized LSI, MEMS sensor, crystal oscillator, and passive components into a 3D structure. Those technologies enable the production of the world smallest class wireless sensor nodes with ultra-low power consumption for low-frequency vibration monitoring, and for temperature and humidity measurement.

The dependence of radiophotoluminescence (RPL) and photoluminescence (PL) properties on x-ray irradiation dose and heat-treatment after irradiation was investigated for Ag<sup>+</sup>-activated phosphate glass, which is practically used as glass dosimeter for individual monitoring of ionizing radiation. The RPL intensity was increased with increasing x-ray irradiation dose, while the PL intensity was oppositely decreased with x-ray dose. The glass exhibited the vice versa tendency between the PL and RPL changes for heat-treatment at 250&deg;C after x-ray irradiation, that is, the PL intensity was increased with annealing time, while RPL was decreased with annealing time. These results strongly support that the luminescence center of the PL is Ag<sup>+</sup> and the centers of yellow RPL and blue RPL are Ag<sup>2+</sup> and Ag<sup>0</sup>, respectively, which has been proposed in previous report. In addition, annealing temperature at 250&deg;C for 40 min made it possible to save much energy and time required for recovering the used glass dosimeter to initial condition before x-ray irradiation.<br>It was also found from the dose dependence of the RPL intensity that the RPL intensity was saturated around higher dose region than about 15Gy, which means that there is no linearity between RPL intensity and radiation dose in high dose region.

We have developed a multichannel taste sensor with artifical lipid membranes and have applied it to quantification of taste of green tea. We used multiple regression analysis and found high correlations of outputs of the taste sensor with the results of sensory test (taste, flavor and color) and chemical analyses (amino acids and tannin that are main taste substances in green tea). It is concluded that the taste sensor has a potential for quantification of taste of green tea. The taste sensor responds not only to amino acids and tannin, but also to many other taste substances, and hence it contains much more taste information than conventional chemical analyses.

In this paper, an optical pressure-sensitive membrane based on plasmon resonance absorption has been designed, fabricated, and demonstrated. The membrane utilizes plasmon resonance on a gold island film embedded in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layers, and the shift of the resonant wavelength was used as an indicator of pressure-induced strain of the membrane. The membrane with total thickness of 100 µm were prepared with spin-coating of PDMS and vacuum evaporation of gold island film with the nominal thickness of 10 nm. Pressure sensitivity of the fabricated membrane was demonstrated from the measurement of absorbance spectra and the maximum sensitivity of 0.35 nm/kPa was achieved by applying pressure up to 35 kPa. Plasmon resonance mode attributing to the pressure sensitivity has been analyzed through comparison between electromagnetic simulation and membrane stretching test. From the stretching test, red shifts of the resonant wavelength were obtained for both parallel and perpendicular polarizations to the tensile direction with the sensitivities of 0.372 and 0.134 nm/%, respectively. From the electromagnetic simulation, these red shifts can be attributed to both gap-mode and deformation-mode resonances of the gold island film.

An olfactory display is a device that delivers various odors to the user's nose. It can be used to add special effects to movies and games by releasing odors relevant to the scenes shown on the screen. In order to provide high-presence olfactory stimuli to the users, the display must be able to generate realistic odors with appropriate concentrations in a timely manner together with visual and audio playbacks. In this paper, we propose to use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations in conjunction with the olfactory display. Odor molecules released from their source are transported mainly by turbulent flow, and their behavior can be extremely complicated even in a simple indoor environment. In the proposed system, a CFD solver is employed to calculate the airflow field and the odor dispersal in the given environment. An odor blender is used to generate the odor with the concentration determined based on the calculated odor distribution. Experimental results on presenting odor stimuli synchronously with movie clips show the effectiveness of the proposed system.

The human body emits various volatile molecules, depending on a person's genetics, stress, disease and so on. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be found in human transpiration, breath and transdermal gas emanated from skin. In this review, a biochemical gas sensor “bio-sniffer” and a gas imaging system “sniff-cam” for monitoring of VOCs such as acetone, ethanol and acetaldehyde were presented. Firstly, a high-sensitive acetone biochemical gas sensor was demonstrated and measure exhaled breath acetone concentration, and assess lipid metabolism based on breath acetone analysis. Secondly, a fluorometric imaging system for ethanol vapor released from human breath and palm skin was presented. This imaging system measures ethanol vapor concentrations as intensities of fluorescence through an enzymatic reaction. These biochemical gas sensors and imaging system of VOCs showed a rapidly and accurately responses and measurement, which could lead an analysis to metabolism function and non-invasive screening at real time in the near future.

In this paper, we propose a method of construction of inter-vehicle network for coupling and decoupling vehicles. First, we describe the problems associated with construction of inter-vehicle network. Second, we propose two sequences of procedures how to solve these problems by grasping the connection matrix. Finally, we show the prototypes to which the method is applied, and we perform the test for function confirmation and evaluation of the method.

We have developed an infrared detector and a micro variable infrared filter for micro-spectrum analyzing devices. Two infrared detectors and the infrared filter were mounted on the identical package. A micro-spectrum analyzing device of 1cm<SUP>3</SUP> volume as the two wavelength NDIR system for combining these elements with the infrared source was able to measure the concentration of carbon dioxide.

A CO<sub>2</sub> sensor was set up by using Na<sub>3</sub>Zr<sub>2</sub>Si<sub>2</sub>PO<sub>12</sub> (NASICON) as a solid electrolyte, Li<sub>2</sub>CO<sub>3</sub> as a carbonate phase. The EMF (Electromotive force) was linear to the logarithm of CO<sub>2</sub> concentration and hardly depended on interfering gases by using a zeolite filter. The &Delta; EMF (EMF<sub>Air</sub>-EMF<sub>Gas</sub>) was stable even after the test of unpowered exposure to a high humidity atmosphere. The CO<sub>2</sub> monitor in which the CO<sub>2</sub> concentration is calculated by the &Delta; EMF using a new renovating system of the standard EMF was developed as a monitor for air quality control. The output of the monitor indicated a good agreement with that of the usual NDIR analyzer at the field-test in the office.
