The present study was aimed to survey the relation between habitual exercise and the quality of nocturnal sleep. Questionnaires on exercise behavior and sleep were given to 452 male and female unuversity students. The questionnaires included such questions as; on their habitual exercise the kind of exercise, duration and frequency of doing the exercise, the period of continuation, rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and subjective feeling of their exercise load for health (heavy, suitable, light). TMIN Life Habits Inventory were conducted to ascertain the quality of sleep. The results of all the students showed that they were more likely to experience insufficient asleep period (64.6%), were not refreshed in the morning (40.0%), found unbearable daytime napping (38.5%). The student group with habitual exercise (n=237) showed significant "more easily fall asleep" (p<0.05) and" more insufficient asleep period" (p<0.05) tendencies than the group without habitual exercise. Further, three groups divided by their subjective feeling toward their exercise load showed some significantly different quality of sleep. The students who felt that their habitual exercise was "suitable" or "light" showed better sleep, with reference to frequency of naid-sleep awakening and deepness of sleep, as compared with students who felt that their exercise was "heavy" (p<0.05). These results indicate that suitable or light habitual exercise might facilitate better quality of sleep while heavy exercise which strongly activate the sympathetic nervous system, pose a risk to disrupt sleep.

Deaths and morbidity due to heat disorders during physical activity were gleaned from newspaper reports between 1970 and 1990. The environmental temperatures (dry-bulb temperature and relative humidity) recorded at the closest meteorological observatory at the time of occunence were used to calculate the wet-bulb temperature and WBGT (wet-bulb globe temperature), and the relationship between heat disorders and environmental temperature was analyzed. During the 21-year period, 108cases of heat disorders (91 deaths and 477 casualties) were reported in newspapers. Of the 91 deaths, 9 were in females and 82 were in males, and meanages were 23.3years, females and 19.0 years, males. It was possible to record the environmental conditions at the time of the heat disorder in 99 cases. The results indicated that almost all disorders occurred at ranges higher than 25.5℃, dry-bulb temperature, and 20.0℃, wet-bulb temperature, 40% relative humidity, and 24.0℃, WBGT. The mean WBGT was 28℃ at physiological intensities less than 12-RMR (Relative Metabolic Rate) and 25.8℃ at RMR higher than 15. The seasonal distribution was from April to November. In cases observed in April, May and November, abrupt rises in WBGT in the 1.2〜3.4℃ range were observed on the day of occurrence in comparison with the previous day, suggesting that the degree of heat acclimatization is olso an important factor in preventing heat disorders.

The subjects were five male race-walkers (race-walker group) and five male college students (control group). The results obtained were as follows : 1.Under race-walk conditions, the highest speeds attained in the race-walker and control groups were 200〜220 m/min and 160m/rnin, respectively. Under normal walking conditions, however, the values were 140 m/nlin in both groups. 2.A lower oxygen requirement was observed at slower speed during normal walking and at a higher speed(over 130 m/min) during race-walking. 3.Oxygen requirement(ml/kg/100 m) in the race-walker group was minimal at 60〜80 m/min during race-walking and at 60 m/min during normal walking.Values in the control group were minimal at 60 m/min under both walking conditions. 4.The oxygen requirement in the race-walker group was less than that of the control group under both walking conditions. 5.Under normal walking conditions,as the speed increased, both step-length and step frequency gradually increased, until step-length reached a limit of 80 cm. Thereafter, walking was maintained only by an increase in step frequency. However,in the race-walkes group, the subjects were capable of increasing their step-length further, and maintaining a higher speed(up to 220m/min). 6.It was suggested that race-walking is one of the most efficient exercises for maintaining and improving health.
