The present authors have recently proposed a new method for obtaining the stress-intensity factors for the opening and the sliding mode cracks in two-dimensional problems. The same method has now been extended to the calculation of the stress-intensity factors for the opening mode crack in three-dimensional problems. The validity of the method has been examined for a number of cylindrical bars with internal circular cracks of various radii and the results have always turned out to be fairly satisfactory. In addition, for further examples, the effects of the specimen length and the thickness on the variations of the stress-intensity factors across the thickness of center-crack tension specimens have been investigated. These results are compared with other stress-intensity factors available in the existing literatures.
