This paper proposes an optimum path selection approach by using the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) technique and HEARTBEAT chunks in SCTP. The current trend of communication technology is moving towards high mobility with high quality services, especially in real time applications such as VoIP and video calls. In order to maintain the continuity and the quality of these services, an appropriate handover scheme is needed. One of the best options in achieving this target is by executing handover on the transport layer by using SCTP. Its multi-homing feature enables the system to create redundant connections from the mobile host towards the corresponding node, creating multiple paths which can be selected. Several parameters, end to end delay and signal strength in particular, can be used as criteria to choose the optimal path. However, having the best signal strength does not mean that the path is optimal. Thus, integrating both parameters using the probabilistic equation from the ACO, the optimum path can be determined. In addition, a strategy to manage the HEARTBEAT chunks is introduced to help in updating the status of the current existing path in the created SCTP association. This paper proposes an optimum path selection approach by using the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) technique and HEARTBEAT chunks in SCTP.
