The present paper is a report of the damage to buildings in the Nagano earthquake that occurred on July 15, 1941, with a theoretical discussion. With the kind assistance of Mr. Kodaira, the writer examined the seismic region during the period from July 17 to July 23, which had an area of about 10km in dia. consisting of nine villages, situated north-east of Nagano city, and quite close to it. The buildings in the seismic region are mostly farm houses together with granaries and sheds. The investigation in the field was made from the point of view of the dynamical theory of seismic vibration of a structure that we had developed recently.
