The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between land use change and the habitat expansion of the Japanese macaque in central Bousou Peninsula. In the 1880's, about 30% of the study area was occupied by grassland and coniferous forest, while broad-leaved forests were fragmented. This means suitable habitat for Japanese macaque was fragmented and habitat expansion was obstructed. From the 1880's, 1960's, to the 1980's, the area of broad-leaved forest expanded rapidly. With this land use change, the habitat of the Japanese macaque also expanded.
