At the Saint-Gaudens plant of La Cellulose du Rhône et d'Aquitaine (170, 000t/year of bleached hardwood kraft pulp), the replacement of sodium hypochlorite with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and oxygen gives a high-quality commercial grade of hardwood pulp (whiteness increased by 1 point, with a 20% improvement in the degree of polymerization, a 12% improvement in the breaking length, and 21% improvement in the square root of the product of bursting strength × tearing strength), and this without any loss in the qualities of bulking and opacity. In addition, the savings in chemicals amount to between 30 and 35 Francs perton of commercial pulp (on the basis of 1986 prices), without mentioning the merits of the elimination of sodium hypochiorite production.
