Despite great advances in certain specific areas, contemporary Japanese typography still has many problems. Among these, this present study looks at schemes for combining Japanese and Western fonts, a subject of unquestionable importance in the field of Japanese typesetting today. Inasmuch as the origins of Japanese and Western scripts are completely different, careful consideration must be given to their combination. Herein we focus upon the formative aspects of Western typefaces when combined with Japanese fonts as a design study toward more aesthetic dual-function Japanese typography.
