According to my experimental study of the saliva, the human gastric juice contains chemical substances, which differ in their action upon the ptyalin in the saliva. One substance is hydrochloric acid, which obstructs the ptyalin in a certain concentration and the others are similar to peptones and salts, and help the ptyalin. As a rule, the action of the favourable substances overcomes the obstruction of acids under normal conditions.
