In Ben Jonson's Bartholomew Fair, Wasp, Busy and Overdo who represent some authoritymust undergo hardships through the fair and surrender their authoritative attitudes. In this paper I specify the meaning of their ordeals by examining their resemblances to the rites of passages. Then in this anthoropological approach I identify Jonson's vision of the free and equal relationship between men, which is the core of this comedy.
