電子ペーパーはディスプレイと紙媒体の長所を両立させた理想的な表示メディアを目指しているといわれる。このコンセプトに基づいて,電子ペーパーに対するさまざまな期待や関心が集まりつつある。本論文は,電子ペーパーに求められる要件や実現形態などを概観した上で,電子ペーパーの課題や将来の用途を展望するため,読みに関するSD 法を含む媒体の評価実験(8 人,短時間での読書),およびアンケート調査(20 人)を実施した。評価実験の対象は電子ペーパー製品の一種類であるLIBRIe(ソニー),CRT モニター,LCD モニター,および文庫本の4種類の媒体であった。その結果,読みやすさにおいて,LIBRIeは文庫本には及ばないが,既存のディスプレイより優れていること,一方,操作性においてLIBRIe はCRT,LCD にも劣ることが示唆された。アンケートの結果において,電子ペーパー製品の読みやすさは評価されたが,操作性と重量が改善点として挙げられた。また,現有の電子ペーパーの普及率は予想したほど高くなかった。 Electronic paper (e-P) is a display medium which is believed to aim at the ideal media with the advantages of display and paper. On this concept, e-P has attracted various expectations and interests of people. Also, a rapid progress has been made in the technological development in this area. This report consists of two parts: First, essential factors asked for the e-P and the realized forms of these factors were summarized. Then the present existing state of the technological development was outlined. Second, an experiment (8 participants, reading in short time) was carried out to evaluate four types of display media: an e-P book (LIBRIe, SONY), a CRT, a LCD and a pocket book. Then a questionnaire was administered to survey the task and the usage of the e-paper in the future from 20 students in the University of Tsukuba. The results of the experiment in the comfortable reading suggested, that the e-P book was not as good as the pocket book but better than the CRT and LCD. On the other hand, in the easy handling, the e-P was inferior to the pocket book, CRT and LCD. The answers of the questionnaire confirmed the experimental results, and suggested that people were not so familiar with the e-P book by that time.
