Before developing the machine construction, construction works depended on humanpower. The “Songs of labor” was indispensable to achieve simple and hardconstruction works. This paper studies the history of ramming which is the basic and important process for levee constructions from the “Song of labor”, or, “Pontsuki song” points of view. Ramming instruments had been heavier afterimprovements, therefore many people needed to ram together. According to that, the songs of labor had also changed. Many labor songs has disappeared nowadays, but some songs such as “Tankai-bushi” and “Hanagasa-ondo” has become local folk songs and been sung by many people even now. In this study we collect 70 labor songs used all through Japan for levee construction, clear the relations between the distribution of labor songs and construction methods, and discuss the value of the “songs of labor”.
