In a cold region like Hokkaido having continuous snowfall during winter season, people are often found being slipped or fallen down while walking in the snow covered road. This sometimes causes serious injuries or fracture of bones especially to elderly people, and many of them become bedridden. In the traditional way of gait analysis, limited place and range of experiment were the constraints of measuring device. In this study, gait analysis was performed by using wearable sensors to obtain acceleration and angular velocities without the constraints of place and range of experiment. The experiment was carried out on indoor flat road, indoor stairs, paved sloping road (having slope of 5 degrees), snowy flat road and quasi-snowy flat road. The features of gait on the snowy flat road were obtained from the acceleration values.

A fall in walking on snowy road often causes sever hip fracture. For especially elderly person, thus hip fracture has high risk for bedridden. The purpose of this study is to investigate the gait characteristics on snowy road. In this experiment, eight healthy subjects walked onto snowy and asphalt roads. Gait accelerations were recorded at 20Hz by micro-accelerators equipped with the head, hip, knee and ankle of them. As a result, it was confirmed that the gate acceleration of each body segment showed different patterns with road conditions. Slipping during gait on snowy road could be detected from the change of acceleration of ankle.
