Cholesteric liquid-crystalline semiconductors have a potential for electrically pumped devises which can emit circularly polarized light. We synthesized a dimeric liquid crystal 1 consisting of one chiral moiety and two phenylterthiophene parts. In order to increase the carrier mobility, the volume of electronically inactive chiral moiety is minimized. From the results of the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), observation of the micrographic textures under a polarizing optical microscope, and X-ray diffraction (XRD), liquid crystal 1 exhibits a cholesteric phase at room temperature. Moreover, the helical structure in the cholesteric phase can be fixed since compound 1 exhibits a glass transition at 15℃.
