China has developed into one of the biggest energy consumers in the world. The heavy industries have gained prominence. Coal covers 76% of the primary energy supply. The industrial structure and the sulfur oxide emissions from the sulfurous-coal energy are a major environmental concern. Heavy industries alone are responsible for 72% of the total SO_2 emission into the environment. The pollution in the industrial areas is remarkably high. The air-pollution control has so far focussed on dust and particle emissions only. Little or no measures have been taken to control SO_2 emissions. The following measures need to be taken to effectively control the problem of air pollution. 1. Implementation of Laws that insure public health against damage caused by pollution 2. Economically, it will be advantageous to offer incentives to industries to take pollution control measures, e.g. to install desulfurizing devices. 3. Technologically, it is necessary to develop the required desulfurizing devices compatible to local economic conditions or, to introduce the related know how from some other countries.
