[ABSTRACT] In January 1946, a new literary coterie magazine "Kindai Bungaku" was launched. The coterie shared an awareness of issues, and this awareness caused a dispute about "Politics" and "Literature". There have been a few studies that refer to the argument in the field of literature. However these studies ignore its historical context. On the other hand, in the field of history, the philosophical meaning of the controversy has never been analyzed. The aim of this article is to see the dispute in the context of Japan's before and during the war history, focusing on the coterie's awareness of issues, especially on two authors, Ara Masato and Hirano Ken.
