There are many irrigation channels for rice fields in Chikugo City, Northern Kushu. Many of the channels have been reconstructed with new concrete walls. The author investigated moss communities on wooden piles of old style channels which are now rapidly disappearing. Five communities, Amblystegium riparium comm., Fissidens adelphinus comm., Pseudoleskeopsis zippelii comm., Haplocladium angustifolium comm., and Haplocladium microphyllum comm. were recognized on these wooden piles. Fissidens diversifolius, Eurhynchium savatieri, Epitterygium tozeri, and Hypnum plumaeforme were rarely recognized as dominant species in some quadrats.
