This paper aims to clarify our understanding of Andrei Tarkovsky's film, Solaris, through analysis of the textures of things portrayed in the film. A texture, in Tarkovsky's words, is stratums of time, which shows the audience how things were exposed to time in the past and in what condition things are in the present. In other words, a texture has similarity to time and memories. To analyze the functions of textures, I focus on two important parts of the film, “A shot with Harry and Mother” and “A scene of dream of villa”. In “A shot with Harry and Mother”, their costumes catch my eyes in the view of texture. Harry, the protagonist's wife, multiplies in this shot. Some Harries wear a patchwork dress and other Harries wear a crochet shawl. First, her patchworked clothing corresponds with her jumbled memory and mind, for Harry is a guest, who is reconstructed from the protagonist's memories. Second, some Harries and Mother wear crochet shawls. In addition, Mother usually wears a crochet dress. These well-knitted crochet textures show an analogue of the complete other's personality to the protagonist's self. When the protagonist communicates with others, he tends to hurt the other party and vice-versa. In “A scene of dream of villa”, however, there appears a hope for good communication, thanks to the texture of plastic sheets, that protect him from external damage.
