This is a part of the long-term ethnographic study on international and Japanese students at Mie Universlty through interviews and particlpant observation. The analysis is primarily based on the interview data collected in two years from three Japanese students who have been playing leading roles in student international activities. The researcher is in an advisory position to promote interactive opportunities among international and Japanese students. Students' real-time cross-cultural experience has rarely been taken up in formal university education. Nonetheless, it is no doubt that such is one of the precious educational moments worth while recording, analyzing and integrating into classroom education. The researcher aims at in the long-run establishing a method to effectively combine "action,""research" and "education" in the field of cross-cultural education. This article focuses on three aspects of interactive processes : 1) the student group activities that catered to the initial concern for encounters, 2) assistance offered by the Japanese students for the arriving lnternational students and conditions for the development of friendships, and 3) search for equal relationships between international and Japanese students. The final aspect, the equal relationships, was revealed difficult to establish. The continuing search and analysis is presented in a separate study report.
