Two modern high-quality Japanese malting barley cultivars, ‘Sukai Golden’ and ‘Sachiho Golden’, were subjected to RNA-sequencing of transcripts extracted from 20-day-old immature seeds. Despite their close relation, 2,419 Sukai Golden-specific and 3,058 Sachiho Golden-specific SNPs were detected in comparison to the genome sequences of two reference cultivars: ‘Morex’ and ‘Haruna Nijo’. Two single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) clusters respectively showing the incorporation of (1) the barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) resistance gene rym5 from six-row non-malting Chinese landrace Mokusekko 3 on the long arm of 3H, and (2) the anthocyanin-less ant2 gene from a two-row Dutch cultivar on the long arm of 2H were detected specifically in ‘Sukai Golden’. Using 221 recombinant inbred lines of a cross between ‘Ishukushirazu’ and ‘Nishinochikara’, another BaYMV resistance rym3 gene derived from six-row non-malting Japanese cultivar ‘Haganemugi’ was mapped to a 0.4-cM interval on the proximal region of 5H. Haplotype analysis of progenitor accessions of the two modern malting cultivars revealed that rym3 of ‘Haganemugi’ was independently introduced into ‘Sukai Golden’ and ‘Sachiho Golden’. Residual chromosome 5H segments of ‘Haganemugi’ surrounding rym3 were larger in ‘Sukai Golden’. Available results suggest possibilities for malting quality improvement by minimizing residual segments surrounding rym3.

To examine the anti-obesity effects of tea catechins in humans, a trial study using healthy male subjects (27-47 years). Comprising in equal number a low dose catechin (LDC) group (n=11) and high dose catechin (HDC) group (n=12). The groups were administered catechins at 118.5 mg and 483.0 mg a day for 12 weeks, respectively. At 4 and 12 weeks, effect evaluation was made based on change in weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, body fat ratio and abdominal fat as determined by computed tomography (CT) and triacylglycerol, total cholesterol, free fatty acid, glucose, insulin and total plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) in serum. In the HDC group, at 12 weeks, weight, BMI, waist circumference, body fat ratio, abdominal fat and total cholesterol, glucose, insulin, PAI-1 in serum were noted to have significantly decreased from values at 0 week. In the LDC group, only weight, BMI and insulin had changed. In the HDC group, BMI had decreased significantly in 25≤BMI subjects compared to 25>BMI subjects. In the 25≤BMI subjects, BMI decreased significantly more in the HDC group. Tea catechins are thus shown here for the first time to have the anti-obesity effects in humans.

This study aimed to evaluate the retentive force of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and zirconia secondary crowns on ready-made titanium implant abutments (with height, diameter, and taper as 5.5 mm, 4.5 mm, and 6°, respectively) as the primary crown. PEEK, zirconia, and titanium secondary crowns were fabricated using a CAD/CAM system. Insertion and removal tests of secondary crowns on the primary crown were conducted for 2,000 cycles. The initial retentive forces recorded at the 100th cycle for PEEK, zirconia, and titanium were 13.0±7.9, 2.9±2.6, and 27.6±1.7 N, respectively. The retentive forces of PEEK and zirconia showed no significant difference among all cycles. However, the retentive force of the titanium used as a control decreased (20.3±2.8 N) significantly at the 2,000th cycle. Although the retentive force of PEEK was lower than that of titanium, it was within the range that can provide a suitable retentive force of 5 N for removable dental prostheses.

Aim of this study was to investigate effects of space thickness and consistency of wash materials on sulcus depth reproduction with silicone impressions, low (L), medium (M), and very high consistency (VH), using two-step putty-wash technique. Impressions were taken from truncated cones with 50-, 100-, or 200-μm-wide sulci, using the combinations L+VH or M+VH and different space thickness for wash materials: 2 mm (ST2), 1 mm (ST1), and approximately 25 μm (ST0.025). Sulcus depth reproduction tended to increase with increasing sulcus width. Sulcus reproduction of ST0.025 was deeper than those of the other groups. At 100- and 200-μm sulcus widths, sulcus reproductions of ST1 and ST2 with L+HV were deeper than with M+HV. Regardless of consistency, the thin spacer produced deep reproduction. Adequate 0.5 mm sulcus reproductions were obtained with 100 and 200 μm wide sulci and 1- and 2-mm spacer widths, combined with low consistency impression material.
