The conservation movement of Star Ferry Pier and Queen's Pier in Hong Kong awakened collective memory of Hong Kong citizens and led to creation of Hong Kong identity. In this background, the active complexities that Morimitsu Shimizu pointed out as characteristic of the former Chinese rural society exist as undercurrent in immigrant society and seaport society. Hong Kong, where the Pier conservation movement has led to the importance of discovering and preserving historical landscapes, is expected to continue to emphasize its historical character as seaport city.
