Purpose: The estimation of functional connectivity (FC) measures using resting state functional MRI (fMRI) is often affected by head motion during functional imaging scans. Head motion is more common in the elderly than in young participants and could therefore affect the evaluation of age-related changes in brain networks. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the influence of head motion in FC estimation when evaluating age-related changes in brain networks. Methods: This study involved 132 healthy volunteers divided into 3 groups: elderly participants with high motion (OldHM, mean age (±SD) = 69.6 (±5.31), N = 44), elderly participants with low motion (OldLM, mean age (±SD) = 68.7 (±4.59), N = 43), and young adult participants with low motion (YugLM, mean age (±SD) = 27.6 (±5.26), N = 45). Head motion was quantified using the mean of the framewise displacement of resting state fMRI data. After preprocessing all resting state fMRI datasets, several resting state networks (RSNs) were extracted using independent component analysis (ICA). In addition, several network metrics were also calculated using network analysis. These FC measures were then compared among the 3 groups. Results: In ICA, the number of voxels with significant differences in RSNs was higher in YugLM vs. OldLM comparison than in YugLM vs. OldHM. In network analysis, all network metrics showed significant (P < 0.05) differences in comparisons involving low vs. high motion groups (OldHM vs. OldLM and OldHM vs. YugLM). However, there was no significant (P > 0.05) difference in the comparison involving the low motion groups (OldLM vs. YugLM).Conclusion: Our findings showed that head motion during functional imaging could significantly affect the evaluation of age-related brain network changes using resting state fMRI data.

We herein report a case of peripheral neuropathy following exposure to large amounts of glyphosate-based herbicide. A 70-year-old man suffered from pain and purpura in the left sole following exposure to glyphosate-based herbicide. Pain and purpura spread to the opposite side and increased in severity. Mild weakness of the lower limbs was also observed. A sural nerve biopsy revealed the infiltration of lymphocytes around small vessels in the epineurium with numerous eosinophils, deposition of hemosiderins and focal axonal degeneration, compatible with findings of vasculitic neuropathy. Glyphosate-based herbicides should be recognized as a causative agent of vasculitic neuropathy.

An otherwise healthy 44-year-old woman exhibited isolated unilateral oculomotor nerve palsy accompanied by an influenza A infection. An intra-orbital MRI scan revealed that her right third intracranial nerve was enlarged and enhanced. She recovered completely during the first month after treatment with oseltamivir phosphate. Although intracranial nerve disorders that result from influenza infections are most frequently reported in children, it is noteworthy that influenza can also cause focal intracranial nerve inflammation with ophthalmoparesis in adults. These disorders can be diagnosed using intra-orbital MRI scans with appropriate sequences and through immunological assays to detect the presence of antiganglioside antibodies.

We herein report a woman with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) in whom positivity for anti-neurofascin 155 antibodies was revealed 23 years after the onset of neuropathy. The patient initially reported numbness in the face at 50 years of age and subsequently manifested features compatible to typical CIDP. Steroid administration initiated at 54 years of age ameliorated her neuropathic symptoms. Although the nerve conduction indices at 59 years of age deteriorated, those at 68, 72, and 73 years of age showed a gradual recovery. The deterioration and subsequent restoration of compound muscle action potential amplitudes was the most dramatic, suggesting that a conduction block can be reversed earlier than other electrophysiological indices.
