It is no exaggeration to say that the pleasure of reading a narrative lies in anticipating an ending. Not only early structuralist narrative theories such as Gérard Genette's but recent ones, with the possible exception of what is known as <unnatural narratology,< more or less take it for granted that a narrative ends. This assumption dates at least as far back as Aristotle. If a narrative has to end, what remains is the problem of how it ends. This essay concerns the problem of narrative endings as it is addressed in narrative theory.
