A general scheme to realize nons)'xnmetric ltiglaer-order decompositio?t of exponen-tial operators and symplectic integrators is constructed. This gives a uxaif'?ed theory ofthe previous symnaetric and nons)'mmetric decomposition. Ruth's nccuasymmetricthird-order real decompositioxa is showta to be a simple example of tlae prcsent generaltheory.
