In this paper, four case studies are reported in which the embankments of highway made on sloping ground have failed after completion of the road construction works. Relationship between the rainfall and the groundwater was presumed to be the main cause of such failures. Furthermore, some important points aimed at the maintenance, such as the inspection and the reinforcement of slopes, are discussed in this paper.
