This paper examines Constitutionalism and its development in the AustrianEmpire in the 19th century. The Empire established three constitutions or fundamental principles between 1852 and 1867.These are Das Silvesterpatent,Das Oktoberdiplom and DasFebruarpatent . They were absolute and aimed at the centralization of government. However Das Februarpatent in particular established parliamentarism, despite being only inappearance, and so formed the basis of later Austrian Constitutionalism.
