Abstract : This paper deals with the problem of universality and cultural variation in metaphor. I will discuss this problem focusing on dog-related metaphorical expressions found in English and Japanese. The dog metaphor plays an important role in making sense of people, objects and events in both English-speaking and Japanese cultures. It is true English shares several dog-related metaphorical meanings with Japanese, but there are also some semantic differences in the dog-related metaphorical expressions in the two languages. It will be demonstrated that these similarities and differences are closely related to the ways people have interacted with dogs in Western and Japanese cultures. Keywords : metaphor, dogs, universality, cultural variation
