Chemical reactions and pathways involving a metal cluster change dramatically with the cluster size and composition. These dependences originate essentially from the electron correlation of the cluster, and hence are closely related to the geometrical and electronic structures of the cluster. Along with our recent studies, the following subjects are reviewed: (i) reactivity, (ii) geometrical and electronic structures in relation to the reactivity, (iii) reaction dynamics, and (iv) catalytic properties.

Flagellar motor is a nano-sized rotary machine. Despite of 40-year research on the flagella, the physic-chemical principle of torque generation in the motor is not clear. Even the conventional technique for measuring torque has a flaw as an experimental method. Image of the flagellar motor is extensively changing at the moment. Updated information on the flagellar motor is presented.

In visual systems and fluorescent proteins, controlling the photo-absorption/emission energy (color tuning) of the chromophore is the essentials to furnish a protein with the photo-functionality. Depending on the protein environment, the chromophores show a variety of colors, which are relevant to the character of the excited states and to the interactions between the chromophore and the environment. Here we summarize our recent studies on the spectral tuning mechanism of the human visual cone pigments and the fluorescent proteins. These studies elucidated a common feature in the color tuning, which also suggests a strategy to artificially control the color of proteins. We also explain our recent progress in developing the symmetry-adapted cluster-configuration interaction (SAC-CI) method and hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) method particularly for studying the photo-functional proteins.

Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimter Array (ALMA) is a large aperture-synthesis radio telescope constructed in northern Chile by international collaboration among east Asia, north America, and Europe. It observes spectral line emission/absorption of molecules and thermal emission of dust particles in various kinds of astronomical objects with much higher sensitivity and much higher angular resolution than conventional radio telescopes in the world. ALMA has started its early science operation from 2011, and chemical processes during star and planet formation are being explored in detail. Even in the early science operation, many surprising results are coming out. In this article, I would like to highlight some of them in particular emphasis on possible relation to molecular science.

Liquid interfaces play ubiquitous roles in many fields of chemistry and related sciences, though molecular-level understandings of liquid interfacial phenomena are still far from complete. Main obstacles for the further advances are (i) scarcity of experimental probe techniques with sufficient surface sensitivity and selectivity and (ii) lack of reliable analysis methods of the experimental observables about liquid interfaces. In the present review we summarize our recent efforts to overcome the above difficulties, by combination of vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy and molecular simulation. Close collaboration of these methods has shed light on clear understanding of the liquid interfaces.

Principles of organic photovoltaics such as p-i-n junction concept, nanostructure design, and bandgap science for organic semiconductors are surveyed. Details of the invention of p-i-n junction in the history of organic photovoltaics are described. Research targets based on molecular science, which assist the development of organic photovoltaics, are proposed.
