This study examined the influence of autobiographical memory of experiences of success or failure on learning motivation. Participants (N = 216) completed a scale that assessed their degree of learning motivation. They were asked to recall autobiographical memory of experiences of success or failure and to rate these memories based on 6 items pertaining to memory characteristics (e.g., vividness). Participants then completed the learning motivation scale again. Participants obtained higher post-test scores on the motivation scale, compared to the pre-test scores. In addition, autobiographical memories of successful experiences were more emotional, positive, vivid, and frequently remembered than were memories of failure experiences. Autobiographical memory pertaining to effortful experiences as a facilitator of learning motivation will be examined in future research.
