個人と社会の関連性という問題は, コンラッドが作家となった当初から晩年に至るまで常に彼を虜にしてきた主要な問題であった。時にはリンガード(Captain Lingard)やジム(Jim), ノストローモ(Nostromo)のように個人的な夢想の世界における自己の理想像を現実の社会において実現しようとした男達, また, ヘイスト(Heyst), ラズモフ(Razumov)やバーロック(Verloc)のように現実社会から逃避しながら自分の行動を観念的に正当化しようとした男達もいた。彼等に共通する点は, 積極的であれ, 消極的であれ, 現実社会との関りにおいて, 常に自己中心的な考え方や行動が多分に見うけられるのである。その結果, 彼等は, 愛する者を亡くしたり, 自らの生命を落したり, あるいは自己の世界の崩壊を目の当りに見るといった, ある意味において, 自己の性格的欠点に起因する苦い人生経験を味わった人物である。『放浪者』におけるペロール(Peyrol)は, 先に述べた人物とは一風かわった人物であり, コンラッドの作出した人物の中では最も現実的, 中庸を心得た人物であると思われる。そこで, この小論ではペロールなる人物に視点を置き, コンラッドの個人と社会に対する考え方を, そして革命についての考え方を考察してみたい。

"This research is an analysis of the system of physical education in Japan during the Taisho period. This system, against a background of nationalistic military thought, was built on the school physical education system. It, in the end, extended to military training. It can also be said however, that this Taisho system through its various outgrowth was the forerunner of today's Japanese physical education. With this in mind, this study is felt to be of particular significance."

"The thermal decomposition of nickel hydroxide was investigated. The decomposition of binary metal hydroxides of the brucite type is usually represented by the equation M (OH)_2=MO+H_2O. The decomposition of nickel hydroxide followed this equation. The effects of the kinetics of reactions, the type solid→solid+gas, on the corresponding differential thermal analysis pattern were explored. The activation energy of nickel hydroxide by differential thermal measurement was 59 Kcal/mole, and the reaction order was 0.9."
