We provide an updated taxonomic revision of the genus Marchantia L. in Japan. Seven taxa [Marchantia emarginata Reinw., Blume & Nees subsp. cuneiloba (Steph.) T.X.Zheng & M.Shimamura, M. paleacea Bertol. subsp. paleacea, M. paleacea subsp. diptera (Nees & Mont.) Inoue, M. papillata Raddi. subsp. grossibarba (Steph.) Bischl., M. pinnata Steph., M. polymorpha L. subsp. polymorpha and M. polymorpha subsp. ruderalis Bischl. & Boissel.-Dub.] were recognized based on the examination of types, newly collected specimens during intensive fieldwork and our recent molecular phylogenetic analyses. For each taxon, morphological descriptions, illustrations of important taxonomic features, distinguishing characters, distribution in Japan, habitat and detailed taxonomic notes were provided. Based on the remarkable morphological discontinuity, the elements of Marchantia subg. Preissia (Corda) D.G.Long, Crand.-Stotl., L.L.Forrest & J.C.Villarreal were reinstated as the genus Preissia Corda and the genus Bucegia Radian. We also discuss the redefinition of the genus Marchantia in anticipation of a comprehensive revision in the future.

New catalog of the Mosses of Japan prepared by Dr. Zennoske Iwatsuki (2004) is revised. This revised catalog lists all names of genera and species of mosses described or reported from Japan, based on literature available to the author up to the end of January 2016. The catalog is now comprised of 1270 species of mosses belonging to 342 genera. These taxa are listed in alphabetical order. Each valid epithet is followed by author citation, literature, distributional area in Japan, and Japanese name.

Re-examination of morphological features and newly executed molecular analysis based on chloroplast (rbcL, rps4, and trnL-F) and nuclear (ITS1&2) genomes revealed unexpected diversity in Symphyodon perrottetii Mont. s. l. (Symphyodontaceae) in East and Southeast Asia. Japanese plants previously recognized as S. perrottetii are shown to include at least five different species: S. asper (Mitt.) A.Jaeger, S. copelandii Broth., S. gollanioides Nog., S. recurvomarginatus (Dixon & Sakurai) H.Akiyama, comb. nov. and S. rheophilus H.Akiyama, sp. nov. In addition, previous Japanese record of S. echinatus (Mitt.) A.Jaeger is actually S. asper. Symphyodon longispinosus H.Akiyama, sp. nov. from southwestern China is newly described. Subsequently, S. perrottetii s. str. is excluded from China and Japan and has its revised distribution range from southwest India (type locality of S. perrottetii), Sri Lanka, central Thailand, and Singapore. Symphyodon merrillii Broth., once regarded as a synonym of S. perrottetii, is again recognized as a distinct species with its distribution in Malesia and Indochina. Symphyodon ovalifolius H.Akiyama & M.Suleiman, sp. nov. is described and classified under the subgenus Parasymphyodon H.Akiyama & M.Suleiman, subg. nov. Rheoshevockia fontana Ignatov, W.Z.Ma & D.G.Long is again demonstrated to have a unique systematic position sister to the genus Symphyodon.

Orthotrichum amabile Toyama, previously considered a synonym of O. erubescens Müll. Hal., is recognized as a good species. Orthotrichum ibukiense Toyama is proposed as a new synonym of O. cupulatum Brid.

Type materials of Central and South American little-known species in the family Trichocoleaceae are critically reviewed. On the basis of the presence of perianths Trichocolea brevifissa Steph. and T. sprucei Steph. are newly included in the genus Leiomitra Lindb.: L. brevifissa (Steph.) T.Katag. and L. sprucei (Steph.) T.Katag. Trichocolea floccosa Herzog & Hatcher from Costa Rica is newly synonymized with L. sprucei. The worldwide key to the species of Leiomitra is given for the first time.
