The probabilities of the two-photon ionization of cesium atoms by ruby laser light from $6p_{1/2}$, $6p_{3/2}$, $5d_{3/2}$ and $5d_{5/2}$ excited states were calculated. The densities of the excited atoms in the cesium discharge tube were estimated from the measured density and temperature of electrons. The calculated increases of the electron density show good agreement with the experimental results.

The aim of this paper is to understand the condition of emergence of social hierarchy in a competitive society. We introduce a minimal model which incorporates cost for participating in fighting in order to understand effects of the difference between the gain for a winner and the loss for a loser. We show numerically and analytically that phase transition from an egalitarian state to hierarchical states occurs in two steps as the frequency of fighting is increased for any value of cost except when the reward is equal to the cost or to twice of the cost, and when no cost is required. Furthermore, we determine the phase diagram consisting of one egalitarian phase and three distinct hierarchical phases in the parameter space of the cost and the frequency of fighting.

Phonon dispersion relations of CuBr having zincblende-type structure were measured by the neutron inelastic scattering technique with a triple-axis spectrometer. The dispersion curves measured at 77 K were well described by the shell model with 14 parameters which has been successfully applied to explain the data for GaAs, GaP and InSb. The elastic constants were obtained both from sound velocities estimated from the initial slopes of acoustic phonon dispersion curves and from the shell-model-fit. The optical phonon energies at the zone center are in good agreement with the Raman scattering data. The temperature dependence of phonon scattering was also measured. It was found that the phonon energies as well as the shape of phonon peaks varied considerably with temperature, suggesting that the effect of anharmonicity is remarkable in CuBr even at room temperature.

To find integrable and nonintegrable regions of the Rikitake two disc dynamo system we investigate its Painlevé property. This means we perform a singular point analysis. This analysis gives us a hint where global constants of motion exist. We also investigate related systems.

The onset temperature $T_{\text{m}}$ and the Vogel-Fulcher temperature $T_{0}$ were determined for the structural glass Rb1-x[N(H1-yDy)4]x(H1-yDy)2PO4 ($x{=}0.5$, $y{=}0{\sim}1.0$) by the measurement of the complex dielectric constant. The values of $T_{\text{m}}$ and $T_{0}$ increase markedly with the deuteration rate $y$. It is found that the polydispersive nature of the dielectric dispersion becomes appreciable below $T_{\text{m}}$. The breadth of the relaxation time distribution increases as temperature approaches $T_{0}$.

We consider the Eigen model with non-Poisson distribution of mutation number. We apply the Hamilton--Jacobi equation method to solve the model and calculate the mean fitness. We find that the error threshold depends on the correlation, and the suggested mechanism may give a simple solution to the error catastrophe paradox in the origin of life.
