Colored nacreous pigment used so far is a mixture of various colored pigments and titanium dioxide coated mica (TiO2-coated mica). One of the major problems for apprications to cosmetics and other fields is the lack of stability and safety of it. We have developed a colored nacreous pigment having bright color tone and pearly gloss having excellent stability and safety. In order to obtain such colored nacreous pigment, a part of titanium dioxide layer on mica was reduced to black titanium oxide, and then the reduced TiO2-coated mica was coated with titanium dioxide. The products obtained were the colored nacreous pigment, which was colored by interference color of titanium dioxide, and had extremely improved color tone, good consistency of color appearance and interference color. Various colors were available by adjusting the thickness of the titanium dioxide layer coated on the reduced TiO2-coated mica. This colored nacreous pigment does not contain any colored pigments.

A recent development in magnetic fluids research is reviewed. The research activities in this field are increasing accompanied with the success of the synthesis of magnetic fluids with excellent magnetic properties. Apparent viscosity and rheological properties are discussed in connection with the particle aggregates in the applied magnetic field. As the thermo-fluid dynamics of magnetic fluids, recent investigations on the pipe flow problems and heat transfer control are taken up. Finally, as the representative examples of recent studies on the applications of magnetic fluids, various sensors, actuators, grinding device and heat pipe are explained.

Mechanical properties, cutting performance, etc., of WC-β(WC/TiC=70/30)-TaC-TiN-Co alloy (cobalt contents, 8-8.5%) sintered in vacuum and nitrogen (PN2=2.7 kPa) were studied as a function of TiN/(TaC+TiN) ratios (named TiN ratios).The grain size of βt(WC-TiC-TaC-TiN solid solution) decreased with increasing TiN ratios and it naturally more decreased in sintering in N2, without change in the grain size of WC. The transverserupture strength, in particular, of HIP-treated alloy sharply increased with TiN ratios of more than 0.2. It was found that the resistance to oxidation of alloys was markedly improved with increasing TiN ratios.The results of cutting tests showed that the fracturing and flank wear resistances were scarcely affected by TiN ratios, but the cutting performance of the alloy sintered in vacuum was always superior to that of the alloy sintered in N2.
