The aim of this study is to examine the qualitative and quantitative characteristics that robust train schedules should have. The method we propose to evaluate the robustness of train schedules has two main characteristics; one is a focus on passenger disutility, and the other involves the development of a probabilistic model for the statistical evaluation of train operations. To calculate the robustness indices, we applied a Monte Carlo simulation method that performs iterative train-passenger simulations. We then carried out simulation experiments using actual data to calculate the robustness indices for two train schedules, and compared the results.

The goal of this study is to reduce the bending vibration of railway vehicles by applying a vibration suppression technique that utilizes piezoelectric elements electrically shunted by an external circuit. This paper presents an investigation that uses a scale model of a Shinkansen vehicle about 5m long. Small pieces of piezoelectric elements are bonded to its floor structure and electrically connected to a shunt circuit featuring a design based on a newly proposed method. The results of excitation tests show that the bending vibration of the carbody can be reduced successfully.

YBCO coated conductors attract attention because of their high critical current in high magnetic field conditions, hence calling for a suitable coil fabrication method. One of the critical problems associated with this process, however, is the negative impact on YBCO coil performance due to epoxy impregnation. Epoxy impregnation is an important technique to increase the mechanical strength and thermal conductivity of superconducting coils. However, the bonding strength of epoxy resin is stronger than the delamination strength of YBCO coated conductors in a certain direction. Therefore, thermal stress could damage epoxy impregnated YBCO coils. As a new impregnation material, we have focused on cyanoacrylate resin.

The reduction of aeroacoustic noise generated by pantographs has been an important subject of discussion in increasing the speed of Shinkansen trains. As the panhead significantly influences the aeroacoustic characteristics of the pantograph, reduction of its aeroacoustic noise is strongly demanded. This paper describes a method of evaluating the contributions of low-frequency aeroacoustic noise sources around the panhead. Visualization of these contributions can indicate the structure of such noise sources.
