The deformation of sliding objects plays an important role for determining the characteristics of frictional vibration. Therefore, to understand the frictional vibration of elastomers comprehensively, in-situ observations of contact area are necessary along with force measurements. In this article, after explaining the basics of frictional vibration using a single-degree-of-freedom model, some optical methods of visualizing the contact area (i.e., methods using transmission or reflection of visible light) are introduced. In particular, methods using the total reflection are hopeful to realize sensitive observations of contact area under dry or wet conditions.

Natural rubber is one of the most important polymers produced by plants because it is strategic raw material used in more than 40000 products including the tire. It is focused as carbon neutral industrial material because it is synthesized from atmospheric CO2. Among over 2500 rubber producing plant species, the Para rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg.) is presently the only commercial source of natural rubber. There are some unknown points about the detail of natural rubber biosynthesis. The objective of this review is to provide readers with information on the newest trends of the natural rubber and Para rubber tree research from standpoint of biochemistry and molecular biology.

Demands for high performance chips have been drastically increased along with the development of smart phones, tablet-PCs and so on. Scaling is an ongoing challenge to fabricate a chip with multi-functions in a limited space for semiconductor manufacturers. In accordance with the design rules, critical dimensions (CD) have shrunk in half every two years. Scaling has been realized by making a photolithography pattern finer and finer by implementing a light source that has a shorter wavelength for lithography. In the development of photoresists for each wavelength, such as g-line, i-line, KrF and ArF, it is necessary to select suitable polymer platforms in order to obtain transmittance of the wavelength being used. This report introduces the history of the development of photoresist material and describes future lithography materials such as nano-imprint lithography (NIL) and direct self-assembly (DSA) technology.

This paper is concerned with the discussion on the characterization of carbon-gel developed in the carbon black filled rubber systems. A limit of NMR method for the characterization was also discussed. There exists less mobile rubber molecules and highly mobile ones in the carbon-gel. The less mobile rubber molecules cannot be removed by the good solvent for rubber and they contribute to the reinforcement. The highly mobile ones can be extracted by the good solvent depending on molecular weight of rubber and conditions for the extraction. Therefore, the reinforcement of filled rubber systems cannot be simply related with the content of carbon-gel.

Wide-ranging polymeric materials are commonly used in spacecraft to meet numerous system design requirements. The tolerance of such polymeric materials against the space environment, e.g. vacuum, ultraviolet rays, radiation, atomic oxygen, etc. must be evaluated, because this environment is a known threat for materials, especially polymers. JAXA has been striving to evaluate the tolerance of polymeric materials in the space environment through both ground tests and space exposure experiments, which allows engineers in the space industry to obtain material data detailing tolerance against the space environment. This article introduces the space environment and its effect on polymeric materials, examples of damage to materials in orbit, and the evaluation capabilities for polymeric materials to be used in space at the Tsukuba Space Center, JAXA.
