The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between Selective Mutism (SM) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We conducted an individual questionnaire survey of kindergarten and elementary school teachers about the children with SM (n=17), children with ASD (n=12) and children with Typical Development (TD) (n=12) in their classes. The questionnaire included screening tests for SM, using the Selective Mutism Questionnaire-Revised (SMQ-R), and ASD, using the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ). The results showed that in the SMQ-R, the scores for children with SM were significantly higher than those for other children. Meanwhile, in the AQ, the children with SM and ASD scored significantly higher than the children with TD, but no difference was observed between the two. This suggests that many children with SM are likely to show ASD traits. In future, to support children with SM, we need to find effective approaches to both the SM and ASD aspects of their condition.

Online gatekeeping is a psychological consultation service using e-mail intended for Internet users with suicide risk. One of the problems is that some users do not respond to initial contact e-mails sent. This research aimed to clarify the relation between continuation rate of the service and the reply speed to user’s first-contact e-mails. Specified Nonprofit Corporation OVA received initial mails from 324 people from June 2017 to June 2018, out of which 23 replies were error e-mails, and 11 people were not covered by our services; therefore, 290 users participated. We conducted a chi-square test to assess the association between three types of reply speed (within 12 h, between 12 and 24 h, and 24 h or more) and the consultation continuation rate. Reply speed for the e-mails arriving between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. was related to consultation continuation: responses sent within 12 hours and those sent in over 12 hours produced continuation rates of over 70% and approximately 44%, respectively. Help-seeking intention of users with high-risk of suicide might begin to decline after they have waited for the reply from consultants for more than 12 hours. This study contributes to effectiveness of future suicide prevention consultation using media. Systems that consultants to reply to first-contact e-mails within 12 hours are important for initiation and continuation of consultation for suicide prevention.

The aim of this study was to understand the prevalence and support status of students showing symptoms of selective mutism in special needs schools for students with intellectual disabilities. A questionnaire was sent to the principals of 12 special needs schools for students with intellectual disability in prefecture Akita, asking whether they had students showing symptoms of selective mutism and the kind of support provided. The results showed that six of the 12 schools had students showing symptoms of selective mutism, with a prevalence rate of 1.05%. Types of support provided included speech therapy and environmental adjustments. The results revealed that: 1) the prevalence of selective mutism is higher in special needs schools than in regular elementary and middle schools, and 2) better support is provided in special needs schools than in regular elementary and middle schools.

The aim of this study is to reveal the present condition of special needs education in high schools in Japan. A total of 58 high schools in Yamaguchi Prefecture in Japan participated in this study. The results show that students with some difficulty in school life were enrolled in most high schools, and students diagnosed with mental illness and students needing support for foreign nationality were enrolled in some high schools. Furthermore, the following four characteristics of the current status of special support for students with special educational needs in high school in Japan were found. First, teachers in high school tend not to assess the characteristics and difficulties of students with objective indicators. Second, many high schools have not had sufficient cooperation with organizations outside the school. Third, many high schools did not fully consider accommodation for students with special educational needs in entrance and regular examinations and evaluations. Fourth, many high schools did not perform special-needs-understanding education for other students.
