The 60MWh vanadium flow battery system was installed in Minami-Hayakita substation of Hokkaido Electric Power Co., Inc. (HEPCO), and started operation December 2015, to demonstrate application of the storage battery as a dispatchable power source like fire plants and hydro plants. In commissioning tests, initial characteristics of the flow battery system, such as energy capacity, system efficiency, and response time, are confirmed. These results satisfied the specification of the system. This system has been operated to demonstrate various types of control modes such as load frequency control, compensation for wind power and PV output fluctuation, control for countermeasure against over generation, and so on. In periodic evaluation, it is confirmed that there is no deterioration of energy capacity and system efficiency, which are main performance parameters, for these 2 years of operation.

A marine environmental data integrated acquisition platform (abbreviated MIA) was developed for offshore wind farms as a joint project of five companies in Nagasaki, Japan. The MIA consists of a spar type floater system, a Doppler LIDAR for assessment of wind power resources and sensors for assessment of animal habitat status. Demonstration test of the MIA was carried out on this newly developed platform off the Goto Islands in Nagasaki, and the practical use has been confirmed. In this paper, the authors introduce the specifications, capabilities and part of the field test results of the MIA.

Storage battery is utilized in the grid, in the household, combined with solar power generation, fuel cell, for accumulating overpowered electricity and emitting it while it runs short. But we have very little information of energy loss with storage battery, during accumulating and emitting electricity, by transferring direct current to alternating one and reverse process. The authors have evaluated saving energy and energy loss of fuel cell and storage battery combined system. It says that not only fuel cell trait, whose efficiency is high at full load, but also storage battery trait, which loses some electricity during accumulating, emitting and transferring, should be evaluated. In addition to that, we have tried to evaluate saving energy and energy loss of solar power generation and storage battery combined system. We have got lots of information on these issues.

Japan started full-scale renewable energy after two oil shocks. The government take the efforts into the Sunshine plan (new energy) and Moonlight plan (energy conservation). We promoted research and development of industry, academia and government collaboration. However, MITI just focused on sunlight only in renewable energy in 1993. Since 2005, it was a dark ages for renewable energy, partly excluding biomass. The introduction of renewable energy is now progressing with the introduction of the FIT system in 2012.
